i'll tell you up front i dont' know enough about soccer to get too technical.

but that felt like a kid not getting his glove down on a ground ball. i'm guessing the fundamentals would suggest he should field that ball like a ground ball in baseballl instead of trying to kick it from that point.

    am i wrong?

maybe for a kid but a world class goalie is allowed that latitude -- even if the kid puts his glove down correctly, when the ball hits a rock and takes a bad bounce there's nothing you can do to stop it if it is too late.

When a teammate passes the ball back to the goalie he can't use his hands, with the other team's players so close his only real choice is to kick it out immediately. If he had more time he could try to control it first but that wasn't an option.

    On a related note:

Should be good for some laughs :D Plenty of world-class keepers in there, too

I'm not soccer guy or what not. But, if your own guy passes it back to you in the goal box, you can't handle it with your hands.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

The keeper can NOT handle the ball if it is kicked back to him in the box by his teammate. That rule has been around in international fubtol for about 5 years or more.
One of the reasons for the rule was because it was often used as a time waster. Just pass it back to the keeper let him handle it until an opposing player comes to challenge him or the Ref gets on his case for wasting time.

A teammate can head the ball or pass it off his chest back to the keeper and THEN and only then can the keeper HANDle the ball.

And Dr. Ludicrous, He's English NOT Italian.

Bad thing for England is they are not loaded at goalkeeper so they are going to have to use him until something like this happens again (I doubt it).
Anyway goalkeeping is not the problem for England, their "stars" are under performing big time ala the US men's National Basketball team.

that youtube goal compilation was hilarious. the best were either the ones where they threw it into their own net or when they put it down for a kick and the guys snuck up behind them and kicked it in. Is it me or were there a disproportional amount of ManU keepers in there?

No, the goalie you are referring to is Chris Kirkland.

Everyone pretty much summed it up, it was just one of those things, ball took a bad bounce, sh*t happens. No England fan in their right mind blames him, the only people who blame him are the hacks on fleet street who love looking for a scapegoat. the only thing Robinson could be blamed for is Englands first goal, other than that he was solid as usual.
I feel a lot more confident with him in goal than with David James in goal( for those who watch england play a bit, there's a reason Jamo is known as Calamity James).

    Univac-hal,

you shouldnt have posted that video, i'm a Man.United supporter and there were too many of our "joke" keepers in that vid, from the craziness that was Barthez to Roy caroll, it makes one want to cry, and at the same time thank the good Lord that we have Edwin Van Der Sar.

Reyna's not Italian either but he tried it against Ghana. Of course we'd just played Italy so maybe they gave him pointers after the game.

I hadn't really noticed (honestly), but now that you guys mention it.. :D

Actually I was just trying to point out that every single goalkeeper in the world makes mistakes.. Barthez was a clown, but Man U's legendary Schmeichel is in there too. So is Gigi Buffon, arguably the world's best keeper at the moment. And don't forget the classic by Shay Given, the only Irishman who doesn't know where Dublin is (for those who don't get the joke - he's the guy who puts the ball down without checking his six, allowing striker Dion Dublin to sneak up from behind and poke it into the net)

People notice when keepers mess up because it usually looks dumb.. and leads to a goal. This particular goal will rightly go down as a Robinson howler, but to be fair, he has his own bad luck to blame for it

Not that I particularly care for the England team, anyway - overrated, arrogant and whiny (Liverpool players exempted, of course :p)

I think if Gus Hiddink had been England's coach the last five years they'd have 2 World Cups. They've got the players but their coaching has been horrible and it doesn't look to get any better with McClaren.

Seaman had one of the awefull world cup goals I have seen in that one. Like a 40+ yard free kick floater he let go over his head but in the net.

But the question is, do they really? Media hype can make a player, a team, even an entire league appear far more impressive than they really are. Lampard, for example, is being exposed for what he is even as we speak: a goal-scoring (should that be deflection-scoring) midfielder with good range of passing, but not much more. All he does is take pot shots and hit the occasional long pass for the commentators to wank over. A very good player, yes, but not miles ahead of the one he was at West Ham. And certainly not the second best player in the world

Stewart Downing, Aaron Lennon, Joe Cole. Pace, technique and sublime ball control, says the English media? A dime a dozen in La Liga, that's the reality

Rio Ferdinand, world-class ball-playing defender. Man, hilarious. He's ball-playing, I'll give him that, but the defender bit only shows up once every five games or so

I could go on, but I don't really give a Rooney's ass about England.. or international football, for that matter  Keep the World Cup, sure, but dump all the other competitions and meaningless friendlies. Fixture congestion is seriously getting ridiculous

If you listen carefully you can hear the ball go "bwoop" as it bounces over his foot.

THAT was awesome, I loved the guy at the 5:01 mark just waiting for the keeper to put the ball on the ground...
