Answers to your Rox Salary Cap situation-next year

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by thedreamshake99, Dec 12, 1999.

  1. I did give up on trying to establish
that the Rox were not going to have any
cap room for the next few years.
Especially after this season when Grant
Hill and Tim Duncan would be available.

So here's the Rox salary cap situation
after this season. Its really tough to
    figure out some players salaries,
because the multi year larger deals are
typically back laiden with a larger
chunch due in the final few years. (ie.
Scottie Pippen) So as best I could
research it goes a little something like
    this.

    1. Hakeem 15 million
    2. Cato 7 million
    3. Williams 5 million
    4. Rogers 3 million
    5. Francis 2.5 million
    6. Anderson 2.2 million
    7. Drew 1 million
    8. Thomas 1.2 million
    9. Hamilton .5 million
    10. Bullard 1 million

    11. Maloney 2 million
    12. Maclean 3 million

Total salary after this year. 43.4
    million (roughly).

This years salary cap. 34 million.

Next years cap should be around 37-38
    million

Thats not to include if the Rox do a
sign and trade with Mack or if they just
    sign him out right.

Nor does it include Mobley, who is sure
to command around 6 million a year, or
TMass, who the Rox are going to either
have to keep him, or trade for another
low cost big body. You have to believe
that they'd keep him, because his salary
is low, and he has a decent game when
    he's healthy.

Finally this doesn't include any of next
years draft picks either. So you could
assume another 3-4 million in salary if
    you draft well.

The rox will NOT have the capabilities
to sign any Free agents. Short of a
massive sign and trade deal, where the
rox would give up half their squad to
    get a quality player.

    EXACTLY!!!!

Thank you for putting what i already understand into plain and simple language for folks not-in-the-know. Its infuriating when people seriously post that we can afford to get Duncan or Hill next year with our "cap room".

MAYBE we will land an okay F.A. next year, but it won't be a superstar who will significantly change the team, and even getting ANY quality FA next year is in doubt.

That's one reason the Rocks are so reluctant to sign Mack to a long term money contract, cuz we want some cap room to do a little manuevering, especially for after Hakeem retires.

If I understand this then if Hakeem was to decide rebuilding was not for him and retired we would be under the salary cap??

If under the salary cap can't you sign a player that puts you over as long as you were under when you signed the free agent??

    1. No, Hakeem's contract counts against the salry cap until the end of NEXT year regardless what Hakeem does, which is why we dont want him to retire no matter how old he is -- we want to get something for that money

    2. You can only do F.A.s like that if they were already on your team and that you have Birds rights on that player. I.E. We can go over the cap to pay mobley, but not to pay Duncan(unless we trade for Duncan in a sign and trade, which, as DS99 stated we would have to trade half our team for)
