Yao's big toe is kind weird, sticking out a lot over the other four toes. That is why he is having so much problem with them.
The worst part about the nail growing back is when it gets about 1/3 of the way out and the end of it is just kind of a clump with the remaining 2/3 of the nail bed still exposed. When it gets stepped on then, it's like somebody is taking a rock and stepping on it while it is setting on top of the nail bed. Lemme tell you, ....that hurts.
I suppose Yao is gonna have frequent pedicures from now on to make sure his toenails doesn't grow out?

Who can tell me? Why God makes us have foot nails? What the purpose of them? Your hands' nails are good weapen for fight (especially for women) but foot nails?
WHAT IS THE CHANCE that this could become a bone infection (osteomyelitis) YAO missed 2 preseason games last yr because his toe was bothering him too. So, with this nail-removal + antibiotics...he should not get the bone infection.........RIGHT http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2265744 Updated: Dec. 20, 2005, 3:08 PM ET Yao Ming has surgery on toe, out several weeksESPN.com news services HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets proved they couldn't win without Tracy McGrady. Now they will have to prove they can win without Yao Ming. Yao Ming Center Houston Rockets Profile 2006 SEASON STATISTICS GM PPG RPG APG FG% FT% 22 19.9 9.0 1.3 50.633 83.688 Yao is expected to miss several weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to clean an infection in his left big toe, the team said. Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton performed the surgery to clean out an infection in Yao's toe. Yao was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, which is common inflammation of the bone caused by bacteria. Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said the surgery was successful and that Yao will require antibiotics and rest for several weeks. He did not have a timetable for Yao's return. Yao returned home from Los Angeles before the Rockets beat the Lakers 76-74 on Sunday night. He has had a problem with his left big toe for some time, missing two preseason games because it was bothering him. Yao, the leading vote-getter after the first set of returns for this season's All-Star Game, is averaging 19.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.36 blocked shots. The 25-year-old All-Star has played in 266 regular-season games since joining the Rockets in 2002. Sunday's game was just the third he's missed in his career. Losing the 7-foot-6 giant is a blow for the Rockets (10-13), who recently got McGrady back after he missed eight games with a back injury. Houston went 0-8 without McGrady. Yao isn't the only Houston big man who is hurting heading into Wednesday's game against Toronto. Dikembe Mutombo started for Yao on Sunday, but left the game with a dislocated left finger with 4:51 left. His status for Wednesday's game was not immediately known, and the Rockets have no other centers on their roster. SportsTicker and The Associated Press contributed to this report. I believe he was referring to "completely recovered from the foot-fracture that ended his season and he pointed to the FIBA/Worlds to indicate how Yao has demonstrated his full recovery from that fracture. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/sport/archives/2006/04/12/2003302400
i think the big difference is the toe wasn't actually bothering him this year. he said he has practiced with it "pain-free." anything being done now is purely precautionary. last season he missed time early, because it actually hurt him, they didn't get it fixed properly and he ended up with the surgery. he also wasn't very forthcoming with the injury whereas now he's very proactive on keeping himself healthy.. i think now the doctors and yao have a better idea of what to do and they're making sure history doesn't repeat itself. as long as he's in the lineup game one with this taken care of, i'll be satisifed.
We all need Yao, and a healthy Yao . Then we can go further than before in the new season. The toenail problem was a small problem But is also a big one, this is the second operation on his toenail . I hope the Rocket can take care with the similar problem to all the Rocket player , pay more attention to all the factors affected the player's health. At the same time I hope Yao can get a pair of shoes fitted to him as soon as possible in my opinion.
The darn Reebok people. We should call Reebok people to make sure they take care of Yao's shoes. Imagine how much sale Reebok would lose if the NBA fans + the entire China boycott Reebok.
Unfortunately, this is probably going to be a recurring thing unless we want Yao to miss some time; 3-6 weeks. I had a similar thing happen to me in high school with an ingrown toenail. Two shots of anasthetic and they cut the dang thing out, which is what Im sure happened to Yao. Unfortunately, by that time, the nail had gotten too used to growing the way it wanted to. So naturally, when it began to grow again, it jammed itself right back into the same spot. Getting infected again. That summer I decided to have minor surgery on the thing, and get the root cut out like someone here mentioned. And that is a more serious process, my toe looked like a pin cushion for quite a while with all the stitches it had in it. Ruined me for the soccer team at my school, but my toe has not bothered me since (it cant anymore actually because the nerve that made it grow sideways was cut).
This happened to me 2 years ago in high school. I was playing in a lacrosse tournament up in vail. After I took a shot, some 6'5'' 300 pounder stomped on my foot with his cleats. the big toe nail fell off within a couple days, took nearly 6 months to grow back fully. Since then it has happened two more times to the same foot. My third nail is just growing back now
