I'm in the market to buy a new car, probably a mid-size or compact sedan, that's relatively fuel efficient, easy on the eyes, and in the $20-$30k range. It'll be a daily driver; not looking for anything fancy like GPS nav or anything, just something a little above basic. (I don't even know where to start because I've been looking at cars in th $45-$55k range for my dad...who just suddenly told me he doesn't want a new car and that I should buy one...)

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm also looking for a car but in a lower range since this will be my first new car...A great car that is in your price range is the '07 Camrys. Everyone has been getting or at least looking at them and looks to fit your bill.

Yeah, I would go with a Toyota or Honda. The Corolla and Civic both get 30mpg. You can get a Prius and that will get you 38mpg or so but costs a little more. The Camry and Accord will get you around 22mpg but cost closer to 30k.
All of those cars will last you 15 years.

I just bought a 2006 Acura TSX, and i think thats what you might be looking for.
Stylish yet sporty, and fully loaded, and the only option is Navigation. I bought mine a few weeks ago for 28000 out the door including TT&L. Everyday that i drive my car i love it more. Comes with many options, so thats a suggestion. Camry, Accord. Oh yea, on my TSX, i get 26-28 mpg city, 32-33 highway :D .

just got a toyota prius, and I love it. Easy on the eyes might not always apply, but you've gotta try it out. Bigger than it looks, great mileage, almost unsettlingly quiet and it's a lot quicker than it looks. It's actually kinda taking a little getting used to it, because it doesn't feel like it's working when you're going 90 because it's so quiet

I have finished doing a ton of car research. This might not be the right vehicle for your needs, but I'm convinced that the best car bargain on the market is a Pontiac Vibe. Same vehicle as the Toyota Matrix with nice exterior styling.

    Cheers,
    Brock

i just bought a 06 Honda Civic LX 4 door about 2 months ago.
I drive about 75 miles a day to work and back.
I bought a standard with a spoiler. It drives great
and is very roomie for small car. I get around 37.5 mpg on
almost all freeway driving. I looked at other comparable cars that
get around the same mpg..... the Toyata Corrola and the Scion XB
I liked the Civic the best. I got it for 19,200 drive out but I
think you could get a better deal know.

I agree with the TSX or the Nissan Maxima (this will only get you low 20's in mpg). Anything else mentioned is not really "easy on the eyes"

That is a great car for the money. I had an Acura CL 3.2 Type S a few years ago and loved it. That TSX is nice.

I have a BMW M3 now, i'd recommend that to anyone if they like to waste gas, and buy new tires every 15k miles. lol I'm going to get rid of it in a year or so, it just doesn't make much since other than being fun to drive.

INFINITI G35. Little bit over your 30k limit, but a great car for that price.

Yea, thanks, it really is a great car. It was either that or the TL, but to me the TL is too bulky for my taste. I hate it when people say "Thats a nice car, but why didnt you get a TL." If i watned a TL, i woudla bought one haha! Oh yea, the TL is a bit more pricey, but still a very good deal and great car also

    Domestic or foreign?

    If you're thinking domestic, there's the Impala/Charger/300/Grand Prix/Others.

    Foreign: Camry/Accord/Altima/Maxima/TSX/Galant/Legacy

Just throwing some names out there...

Audi A4 2.0T. You can get one under 30K. Be careful. If you test drive that thing, you will hate how other cars handle in comparison.

You should drive it, just to see how affordable performance is.

Nissan Altima is terriffic, whether it's the 2.5L or the 3.5. You will definitely be happy with that car.

I don't want to highjack this thread, but I can't start my own thread so if this is innapropriate, please open a thread for me but otherwise...

What does everyone think of the Dodge Ram SRT10? The one with the Viper engine...

I have looked up the specs and mileage and all that... But I have to import it if I want it since we don't get it here, I'm trying to get some opinions on the handle, the muscle, the comfort, the reliability of it... Everything you can give me, including comparisons would be excellent...

Definitely a dream car for me, but it sucks that I can't test-drive it.

    Thanks..

Maybe you should wait and check out the '07 Accord or something. I dunno. I have a Camry '07 SE so I can speak on that model. It doesn't suck. You're welcome.

Go to cars.msn.com to get an idea of what's available. Also try www.edmunds.com for an idea of what people are paying.

My wife just purchased a 2007 Camry XLE (four cylindar model without Navigation or seat warmers) for under $30k and she really loves it. Also, look at Mini Coopers. Very small (so don't count on the back seat as more than storage) but they get good gas mileage, are fun to drive, have amazing re-sale values and are made by BMW. You can get one nicely equipped (just not a convertable) for less than $30K.

Good luck and have fun! Oh, and stay away from Joe Meyers. We had a bad experience there.
