CONNECTICUT - Sen. Joseph Lieberman, running as an independent, has a 53 percent to 33 percent lead on Democratic anti-war challenger Ned Lamont. Lieberman, a three-term Democratic incumbent, lost the party primary in August after Lamont attacked his support for the Iraq war.

Lieberman's already said that if he wins, he's voting with the Democratic caucus. Doesn't really help the Republicans either way in terms of controlling the senate.

    I wouldn't count on that.

I gave Lieberman no chance after he lost the primary. I thought his change to an independent candidacy blew his credibility with voters completely. But maybe the Dem nominee is a complete lightweight who isn't fit for office and Lieberman knew it. I have no idea since I don't follow Connecticut politics at all.

Considering Lieberman votes 90% of the time with the Democratic party, I think it is safe to count on it. In fact, in 2007 I wouldnt be surprised if he switches back to the Democratic Party. Something tells me that the "Connecticut for Liebermans" won't have much longevity outside of the Lieberman household.

^ I think Lieberman has already said that he will switch back to the Democrats if he wins and the DNC is set to welcome him back. I think Joe is well aware that given the national mood any move by him to actually change his allegiance is the kiss of political death.

Should that be surprising? Clever commercials aside this guy trying to run as stealth Republican isn't working in the face of an increasingly Democratic Maryland.
