Hayes already played twice that amount, at 13.4 mpg, and he has succeeded.

    Statistical primer at nba.com/sonics:

Hayes got 535 minutes last season, surpassing one common cutoff point.

They will ALREADY be in deep crap if they start Juwan, with his shamefully bad scoring and rebounding, and sub-PG shot blocking. Really, what does the team have to lose by giving Hayes an opportunity to prove himself? Playing time for one of the worst starting PFs in the league? You can say that we're not sure what Hayes can do, but we do know how Juwan performs.

Juwan should and will get atleast 24 mins a game possibly more. I'm very comfortable with him getting time and his shooting will be much needed.

There is a very small sample of games for Howard not starting and we had confused roles/minutes at that time. He is the type of savy veteran that tends to be better on the bench, he can come in and outplay most 2nd string Cs and PFs. I think as long as his minutes and roles are regular, say 10-15 at C + 10-15 at PF (but probably no more than 26 total), he will adjust fine. His strength is knowledge of what he can, and cannot do. Further, limiting his minutes may make him even more effective because it is a lot easier for a guy his age to go all out in 24-26MPG than 32-34MPG.

Chuck Hayes played 13MPG over 40 games. He did have some outstanding numbers, but he also scored less than 4PPG (and 64%FT). For now I still see him as the specialist player who can give you a big lift but if you play too much opponents really take advantage of. I would like to see him progress and glad we have him as a 3rd PF, but lets not get ahead of ourselves that he already better than Howard. Howard also has a lot more length. Say in the playoffs and we are facing TD, KG, or Brand in the critical moments of the game, I would take Howard or Battier (plus help of course) on them over Hayes until proven otherwise.

Dude, did you feel the same about Rodman on the Bulls Championship years? Damn why did Phil Jackson play a guy at PF, that could not hit a jumper. Its amazing they even won any games, let alone championships

Juwan may get more playing time, but he will get less shots since we have Bonzi and Battier, both decent offensive players.

Of course Juwan shot more last year when we had less offensive players.

Are you seriously comparing Chuck Hayes to Rodman? Did you actually see Rodman play when he was with the Bulls? It ain't even close.

You may as well compare Ryan Bowen to Larry Bird (and I only exaggerate slightly). Unless the miraculous happens, Chuck Hayes won't go from being an undrafted rookie scrub to a starting PF on a good team in his 2nd year. We all hope he's in better shape this season and can play longer minutes without piling up fouls. But let's get real.

Chuck Hayes is closer to Rodman than Juwan is to being a good NBA player.

You know he didn't get a lot of minutes, so why are you penalizing him for his per game scoring? His per minute scoring isn't good either, however, Hayes IS efficient. He's not good at FTs, but his OVERALL scoring (TS%) is a terrific 58.9%. Keep in mind that FTs are a very efficient way to score, and that even a "bad" FT% in the 60s or 50s is far higher than most players' percentages from the floor. The trick is to get to the line often enough for your FTs to have a significant effect on your overall scoring, and Chuck Hayes does that much better than Juwan (0.167 fouls drawn per FGA, compared to Juwan's pitiful 0.091, a lower rate than David Wesley's[/url]).

Hayes is the kind of roleplayer you should want on your team: he avoids taking shots from the stars while excelling in other areas of the game, but is able to make the basket when given the chance. Juwan is the opposite: he sucks at just about everything INCLUDING scoring, but he still gets more than his fair share of shot attempts.

It's not hard to better than someone who's horrible in almost every area of the game.

I was going to back up my statement about Hayes getting his best stats against 2nd and 3rd tier players with excerpts from popcornmachine game flows. Since we've relegated him to Rodman status...it's pointless.

the rockets will never be championship contenders unless lucas, novak, and hayes are given significant minutes, but that's highly unlikely under the poor coaching of jeff van dummy

JimRaynor, his scoring average is VERY low even adjusted for 48 minutes.

I am not discounting he did positive things on the court. But it was less than half the games and less than 15 minutes a game and against 2nd tier players who knew (and their coaches knew) nothing about him.

Just having better efficiency numbers on such a small sampling doesn't mean he would be a better all around player if asked to do Howard's role. Now behind Battier and Yao at PF and C, Howard may get favorable match-ups every night and be opponents after thoughts, and he might do more than his man more often than not.

The only reason I said it was nice to have Juwan coming off the bench was because he still has some semblance of a back-to-the-basket game, and the size to back up Yao against weaker centers. Similar to how Corliss Williamson got the 6th man award in 01-02, beating up on lesser opponents in the post (although his PER was excellent for a bench player and he is alot more mobile than Juwan).

People won't be talking about the need for Juwan's "shooting" once they see how Battier cannot defend agile 2's and how he is more effective defending closer to the basket. With the range Battier and Padgett have at the 4, Howard's relegation to a 4th or 5th option, he's going to be phased out of the starting lineup by December even if he is a starter going into the season. It's naive and uninformed to think he is deserving of the starting 4 spot because he is a veteran and has size. The only average/above-average part of his game is his man on man defense, which is nullified when you consider what a terrible team defender he is.
