This was on Fark. It's a moving map of all the powers that have contolled The Middle East through history. Pretty cool exhibit.

I wonder if some day it will show an Iranian/Shiite swath some day?
Things change in the historical time frame.

Very nice, thanks for posting it Dubious. It gives you an idea of how coveted the region we today refer to as the "Middle East" has always been. Almost every single major empire of the past 3000 years conquered/occupied the region.

Not much has changed these days...

very very nice find, ive been looking for something like this for some time now.

looks like i have a bit of history to catch up on... post roman empire up until european colonialism.... thats like 1900 years

i know slightly of the crusades, the mongols and the ottoman empires, but its very very basic. and high school world history didnt even begin to touch on byzantine, caliphate, or saladin :(

american history classes in school are very westerncentric, for good reason i guess.

help me out... wiki, library, where to start?

oh, and mel brooks movie skipped this region totally :D

Sweet! Thanks, Dubious. I love history and geography, and obviously politics. Great find. Perfect for the enormous number of people with a 5 minute attention span for those subjects.

Never invade Russia from the west. Three have tried, and all have failed.

Now coming from the east is a completely different story.

It seemed like some of the rulers they emphasized were not there because they really belong with the big boys but because Westerners are familiar with them for whatever cultural reasons -- and others omitted because of a lack of resonance. It may be that Saladin was singled out because Westerners know his name.

The map is cool. I've wanted to make something like that the world-over but don't really have the skillz to do it. But, I would try to include everyone I could find, not just big players.
