Just exactly how is Novak the 2nd coming of Padgett? Is it because they both can shoot 3 pointers? Padgett is a 4/5; Novak is a 3/4. How is it they play the same role on defense? And speaking of the rotation, it's doubtful either one cracks it this year. Novak was a complete foul machine in summer league and opposing 3/4s will be licking their chops and parading to the FT line when he's in the game. I'll say it again: Many people here have unrealistic expectations for Novak this season. There was a reason he lasted until the 2nd round. His best hope for the long term is to bulk up about 20lbs and become a rotation player at PF. He will never be able to guard SFs in the NBA. Even if Padgett and Novak played the same role, Padgett's contract isn't guaranteed.
The biggest asset that Padgett gives us is that he helps spread the floor out for Tracy and Yao. IMO, we don't have enough of those players.
Whats with some of the hate for Padgett, nobody remembers that the guy hit a game-winner against the Knicks, made 7-8 3s against the Sacramento Kings, made the steal that triggered T-mac to make 13 points in 35 seconds. Padgett also helped out in the playoffs, the guy who could be a big asset if we have a good run this season.
So do I, white kids deserve just as mush a chance to play in th epros as anyone else. Reverse racsim!
This shows that the rockets will cut a lot of guards after the camp...It will be tough situation but 2 or 3 guards who are not working their butt off have to go
this must still be the offseason... 5 pages and growing... it's a thread about scott padgett getting a non guaranteed contract by the rockets. there is more than a good chance he gets cut before the season even starts. PLEASE LET THE SEASON START ALREADY!!!
Actually Padgett is a 4, probably even more of 4/3 than a 5/4. So the overlap in position/strengths/weaknesses for him and Novak are very close. Neither play can guard many NBA players, and will always have their minutes limited by this, thus being foul prone is not a concern, better than giving up a lay-up or allowing a more important player to have to foul when his man has an advantage. But Padgett is an experienced and somewhat proven NBA player, and this I agree is a big difference from a 2nd round pick rookie. I never understood while we kept Bowen over Padgett anyway. Padgett had a real good +/- for us 2 years ago and was good at the 3. The contract is non-guaranted, thus it is a nobrainer move.
Let training camp start, roll out the ball, and let the intense competition begin. At the end of camp we will know who is healthy, and who are the best players. Competition is good.
I think Padgett fell out of favor with JVG late in the season because he really tanked pretty bad some time after the game-winner against the Knicks. I remember one time he took a 3 pointer at the buzzer that was so far off target it was disgusting. I don't think he had much success after that. Either way, signing Rybo to two years guaranteed and letting Padgett go was was crazy. I'm gonna post a poll on Novak to see what the expectations are for him.
The diff between padgett and novak is BIG. Novak is new to the NBA. What some of you don't realise is it won't be that easy to get used to the NBA + JVG complicated style. Padgett already knows his role under JVG and has nba experience. His 3's were really missed last year. Don't be so wishful on novak gettin minutes unless injuries haunt us again. This is a good signing.
It's not like he is guaranteed a spot. They're just giving him a chance to prove that he is good enough. If he's not he's gone, no harm done. A plus may be that someone else will have to work harder to earn their job. A little competition is a good thing.
Padge knows he's got a good shot at making this squad. Otherwise, he would have joined someone else's camp (of course I'm assuming he had that opportunity, which some would say is not a good assumption). Personally, I hope he makes it. We know what he brings, so one less variable to deal with.
Yeah that was the point. Imagine if we still had Rudy Gay and Stromile Swift, all our positions would have been filled.
I guess I could have worded it differently. They want to see if he can "still" play. Either way it's a very small gamble. Either he still can play or he pushes someone else to step up.
I'm telling you, you're going to want that Scott Padgett in there. I've got a fever, and the only cure is more Scott Padgett. JVG, 2007
I agree with the posts that Novak will be at the 3 this year until he gains 20 lbs for next year. In the mean time, Padgett will be the situational 3pt shooting 4. I think everybody else missed the fact that Padgett will serve as a mentor(yeah ha ha) for Novak's 1st year. Both are white. Both can shoot. Both are roleplayers. Novak is a rookie. Padgett is the vet.
