Huh? What kind of argument is that? All the NBA players are professional athletes. SOme are excellent defender, some descent while there are some that absolutely cant stop their man. Take an example from our own team in Bullard. 3 point specialist but someone who cant defend his man even if his life depended on it. Glen Rice has one of the quickest releases in thr NBA and has a very nice post up game. But his game on the defensive end leaves a lot to be desired. This was also one of the main reasons why Phil Jackson did not play him much in LA. Phil preaches defense, especially in playoffs, and Rice just did not give his best on the defensive end.

In terms of logic, your statement is trying to imply that IF you are a professional basketball player THEN you are a good defensive player. Not true.

As for zone defense, yes, it could negate some of the Rice's weakness of the defensive end in relation to man-to-man coverage. But playing zone defense is not a cake-walk either. Plus, lack of good defensive big men on Rockets roster will put a lot of pressure on our perimeter defenders.

Refer to my earlier post. Logically speaking the argument is wrong. Rice does not play in CBA, Europe or somewhere else. He will play for Rockets who play in the NBA. Therefore, his gauge will be NBA players and how they play defense.

Man or girl or whatever you are, you are so f***ing CLUELESS!!!!! No s***, sherlock, I thought he was coming back to especially after he made the comment that the Rockets needed to keep the team together. However, that was the ONLY time he said something positive about coming back, the ONLY time--let me repeat that one more time--the ONLY time. Was Olajuwon happy the last 3 years? Why of course, he wasn't. Did he get our hopes up? Yes, he did. Did he try to screw us and knew what he was doing all along? Hell, yes.

Why do you bring Clutch into this? He had nothing to do with this and I'm sure he doesn't appreciate you dragging his name into this. Get a freaking clue and life, you sick little troll!!

This thread is the best argument I've seen for a minimum age requirement to register on the BBS.

I guess before I ever criticize another player though, I should first remember that he's probably better than I am.

Apparently a lot of us are better than Hakeem though, since he's fair game.

shanna, you're such a sick little troll.

Bucktroll: no s*** about NBA players being professional athletes. Tell me something that I didn't know. Let me ask you something: Do you think that Sam Mack, Tracy Moore, Henry James, Devin Gray, Eldridge Recasner, and Pete Chilcutt wish they were in the NBA now? Well, of course, they wish they were there. Are they better defensive players than Rice? I really don't know and I don't care. My point is, which obviously I did not make clear, that he's in the NBA and he's one of close to 350 people in the WORLD to be doing this for a living. Does that mean he's a great defensive player? That's not what I'm saying. However, he must be pretty good to be doing something that only a select few are doing. If his defense is that bad, then why has he been playing in the NBA for the last 12 seasons? I know that you'll say it's his offense. But, the way that some of you people act, you would think that he couldn't guard a junior high school player. If that was really the case, do you honestly think he would still be in the league? There are plenty of other players in the NBA that are worse defenders than Rice like Bullard, Wizard, Langhi, etc. Maybe he's like Cato when it comes to defense and he's lazy. I really don't know, but I rather have him than Doughnut Shandon Anderson who plays 25 minutes and has zero points. Let's cut Rice some slack here--he's going to be a Rocket. Get use to it and get over it.

KD, here is a partial list of class things Hakeem has done. Manny, please note that one of which is taking a young player under his tutelage. Also Manny because I name a couple of different players in my screen name doesn't mean I dont' like the other players on the team too or that I'm not a true Rocket's fan. To think otherwise is a false assumption.

    Here's the partial list.

1.When accepting his MVP trophy Olajuwon became the first and possibly only player to insist that the whole team accept the normally individual award with him.

2.Turned down millions of dollars from Nike who wanted to Hakeem to endorse their shoes. The amount of money for that alone is in the millions, plus commercials and any other revenue that would come from more exposure was also lost. Hakeem didn't want shoes with his name on it to be so expensive that kids would steal to pay for the shoes or steal the shoes themselves. He ended up have Spalding make his shoes that were high quality and affordable. I don't know of any other athelete in any sport to make this kind of stand. Hakeem was wearing $24.99 sneaks on the court night in and night out.

3.Othella Harrington has amitted how much Olajuwon helped his game. This dispells the myth that Hakeem never helped younger players.

4.Not only did Hakeem help his own team mates he offered to help Shaq with his free throws, and before games I personally saw him giving Shawn Bradley tips, all of which demonstrate superior sportsmanship.

5.Proposed that each summer the 10 best centers in the league train together and show each other 2 moves a piece. Hakeem said that while they give away 2 of their own moves, they each learn 18 new ones. This he said would make all of them better players and help improve the game. However time commitments, egos, etc. from other players prevented this from coming to fruition.

6.This past season when the media blew a story about Olajuwon saying he wouldn't mind playing for Riley out of porportion, the normally reserved, Hakeem went out of his way, above and beyond the call of duty to call Rudy T. on the radio and make sure that his coach knew that there wasn't way any disrespect meant, and that things were smoothe between the two of them.

7.By sticking to his fast at Ramadan, demonstrated to people that despite being a rich athelete, he was able to keep some perspective and not sacrifice what he felt was most important than the game.

8.Played for a fraction of what he was worth much of his career. He was compensated it for the last two years of his career, but the fact that he played for less than his value initially isn't changed.

9.Showed class on the court by not blowing his cool, in the face of several cheap fouls. The one I remember most was Olajuwon in the air for a dunk and Barkley shoving/undercutting him when the game was out of reach for the suns. He knocked Hakeem to the ground, who held his cool. There are numerous examples of this type of behavior.

Then there is the work he does in Africa, scholarships, Olajuwon's kids foundations etc.

Okay, I think this has gone too far. I apologize for losing my cool. I didn't mean to imply that people are not true fans or idiots if they don't agree with my opinion. But looking back at what I posted, I guess it came out wrong. Freak, FranchiseDream, ZRB, and others who like Olajuwon -- I guess we are going to agree to disagree about this. I have liked the Houston Rockets for the last 18 years. Olajuwon was the reason why I started liking the Rockets. However, I believe that as a fan of a team, you like the team no matter who's on it. My whole problem with Olajuwon was the way he handled his exit. He made it pretty apparent that he wasn't happy, but then he does a 180 and acts like he wants to come back. Then, he paints this picture that the Rockets dissed him when they were just trying to do what he wanted by bringing everybody else back. Maybe I'm naive by believing Rudy and CD, but I really think that they wanted him back and he chose not to come back.

It has killed me to see the Rockets not make the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Yet, I'm excited about how they rebuilt the team and at the same time make the team still competitive. It just bothers me to see so much negativity about Glen Rice. I have to admit that when I heard about him possibly coming that I was a little upset. However, I really sat down to look at the pros and cons of this and I came to the conclusion that this deal will help the Rockets. Yes, we still need help at the center position. Yes, we are probably too soft on the frontcourt. But, I have faith in CD and Rudy that they will play to this team's strengths and try to avoid the weaknesses as much as possible in building a team that can make the playoffs and do some damage. We are all Rocket fans here, for the most part, and the season is not even close to beginning. Let's don't go overboard every time the Rockets make a move that may look questionable. It's not like CD and Rudy are purposely trying to make the Rockets bad.

Yes, that's the logical conclusion of my post.

Since I don't memorize Glen Rice's games, no, I cannot do this. I also never said Glen Rice played good or bad defense -- you created that inference yourself. I questioned why you think people are idiots for questioning his defensive abilities -- and your incredibly logical response was essentially that he plays better defense than ME, so he must be a good defender. Outstanding argument, I must add.

I can't believe I am continuing this thread.

shanna, you're such a sick little troll.

    Hell yeah! :)
