Warriors sign Dajuan Wagner GUARD COMING BACK FROM MAJOR SURGERY By Marcus Thompson II MediaNews If there is one thing Warriors Coach Don Nelson can't get enough of, it's scoring. He has another weapon to use with the free-agent signing of former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dajuan Wagner on Friday. Terms of the deal weren't announced, but Wagner reportedly received a two-year deal, the first year for $798,122, the league minimum for a fourth-year player. He joins Mickael Pietrus, Devin Brown and Monta Ellis as backup shooting guards behind Jason Richardson. The Warriors also have Keith McLeod and Andre Owens backing up point guard Baron Davis. Wagner, 23, was pursued by several teams despite the fact he hasn't played since December 2004. That's when stomach pain that had bothered him since college was diagnosed as ulcerative colitis, an inflammation of the colon. The Cavaliers didn't pick up his option after the 2004-05 season. Wagner had his colon removed in October and lost 30 pounds, but he has been on the comeback trail. He has been working out in his native New Jersey and dominated the Philadelphia summer league. Some said he looks better than ever. Joe Bauer, who performed the surgery on Wagner, called his patient's recovery phenomenal. Warriors representatives went back East to check out Wagner and were impressed enough to have him come to Oakland for a workout. At his best, Wagner is a shooter with range who has the athleticism to create. He once scored 100 points in a high school game. Wagner played one college season at Memphis, then was the No. 6 overall pick in 2002 by the Cavaliers. He averaged 13.4 points in 47 games as a rookie but was slowed his second season after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Recently, he totaled 132 points in consecutive nights in separate summer leagues. Wagner, if healthy, figures to be a perfect fit for Nelson. His knocks as a player -- being undersized (6-foot-2) and poor defensively -- aren't as much of a concern in the style of play Nelson plans to institute. Nelson has said he plans to use a small lineup, featuring Richardson at small forward, Mike Dunleavy at power forward and Troy Murphy at center. That would free up some minutes for the Warriors' perimeter glut. Neither Chris Mullin, Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations, nor General Manager Rod Higgins was available for comment. Training camp starts Oct. 3 in Oakland.
For those that are familiar with Wagner.... Is it just me or wouldn't having both Wagner and Monta Ellis on the same team be kind of redundant?
Ellis is more of a bomber/slasher, Wagner is more of a midrange/isolation type of guy. But I know what you mean, they're both score-first undersized guards. It's possible that Wagner's an insurance policy.
How much can they rely on Baron Davis to stay healthy, though? They can use another fast and talented guard in that backcourt, especially now that Nelly is on board. Nelly already said he wants to see Murphy at the 5, Powerleavy at the 4, my guess is Jason Richardson gets most minutes at the 3. That means most guard minutes are played by Baron, Ellis, D.Brown, Wagner, McLeod. History indicates you gotta be cautious about relying on Baron to be there for 70+ games.
I´m not a doctor, but I do have crohns disease which is basically the sister disease of ulcerative collitis. I have had 11 inches of my intestines and part of my colon removed, and so I know a bit about this. Believe it or not, in patients with extreme ulcerative collitis, they can remove the entire colon and sort of make a new one for you. I won´t try to be too specific because I don´t know the specifics and I´ll only end up making a fool of myself, but it can be done and that wasn´t a typo. He had his colon removed. p.s as someone who suffers from essentially the same illness, Dajuan is becoming a hero of mine. I hope he does well in the league. It´s great to see people beating this illness.
They removed his entire colon and made him a new one. I'm not sure how it's done or what it's made of, but they did it.
