I would really like to know what the federal government has accomplished since the 2004 election. If you were running for a house seat against an incumbent, wouldnt you just ask that over and over again? Or am I missing something here...have the President and congress made our country better in the last twenty months ?

Not raised taxes? Not passed amnesty to illegal immigrants (if you believe that's a bad thing)?

    Not invaded Iran.

    Not invaded North Korea.

    Not reinstated the draft.

Not desolved the government and formed a monarchy.

Or if you want to talk about positive actions instead of negative.

DID keep taxes at their current level.

    DID stay out of Iran.

DID stay out of North Korea.

DID keep the policy of no draft.

Did keep the Constitution the way it is written.

What have they done? Well, speaking for Congress...

It's hard to get stuff done when you work less than 80 days a year and only get paid $165,000. (The Do-Nothing Congress that Truman ran against worked more days.)

    Still, there are some things...

They have not passed an Appropriations Bill yet.

They have not passed a budget for FY2007.

I count these as successes because it means they can only screw things up as bad as they did last year and not add to it this year.

Other things they have done since 1/2005...

Not thoroughly investigated Katrina or held oversight hearings on the contracts awarded for the cleanup.

Debased the Congress and the country by arguing over what's appropriate torture.

Agreed with Bush's "Strategy for Victory."

Had a number of Congressmen implicated in scandals.

Apparently accepted Bush's Signing Statements on over 750 laws sent to the WH because ther have been no hearings on those.

Waited until a bunch of miners were killed before thinking about mining safety legislation.

They are working hard to pass laws that would make Bush's illegal wiretapping activities legal ex post facto.

I could go on, but why...

They have further degraded what little semblance of honor and morality this country had left following the previous four years.

Well, after yesterday's compromise, I think they've pretty much thrown it all out.

Judging by the response so far, you'd think we are living in Soviet Union under Stalin.

Count to 10 before someone says Bush is more evil than Stalin.

They've kept themselves busy with the important issues of today like gay marriage, flag burning, and steriods in professional baseball. Oh, I think I remember that they gave themselves more pay while defeating a raise of the minimum wage. Job well done!

No of course not... but then again, Stalin's dead and Bush has a bunch of years left.

Don't know about that, but Van Gundy is more vicious than a capitalist...

I'd be happy to hear you're own take on the question.

I guess if they had accomplished or done nothing, the end result would be much better for US. So many things have changed like the war on whatever or switching from record surplus to record debt etc etc. According to Laoism, "Operating a large country, is just like cooking a small fish." It means, you don't make big movements or total changes all the time, otherwise, that small fish would end up a mess. When one tried to undo everything or change everything Clinton did, you knew it's not going to be pretty.

he saved money by cutting health care and benefits for veterans, which i think is awesome!

he has spent more money than all previous 42 presidents combined. what a true fiscal conservative...watch out goldwater!

look at all the jobs that bush has created. sure, most of the job growth has come at the federal government level and not the private sector, but jobs are jobs! didnt you know that it is conservative to expand the size of the government, which needs alot of people to fight this war on terror. i know that like the war on drugs, a war on an abstract idea like "terrorism" cannot be won, but what you hippies need to understand is that you make ALOT of money by fighting wars that cant be won. and its especially nice when you can help out your friends at haliburton with sweet no-bid contracts.

he's shown a real ability to lie to the american people on a myriad of different issues.
    1) telling us that nobody could have imagined anyone flying planes into buildings, even though the pentagon and the cia just happened to be running drills on 9/11 of just that
    2) telling us that nobody could have anticipated the levies breaking, than the video comes out of the conference at the "western white house" where brownie tells bush there is a high chance that the levies will fail
    3) he told us that when anyone talks about wiretaps, that wiretaps require a court order and constitutional guarantees are still in place. than it comes out they have been doing just that for years.

signed the north american union into law, which basically puts us into an EU-style partnership with canada and mexico and will totally open the floodgates of immigration and lower u.s. wages. on a related note, handed over control of parts of the nafta highway to mexico. will allow mexican military and police to control a checkpoint on the nafta superhighway in kansas city.

bush's "guest worker" program is basically amnesty. they just dont call it amnesty.

just like how they changed the definition of torture to "pressure". you see, we dont "torture" anyone, we "pressure" them. sometimes people die under "pressure", but this is a post 9/11 world we live in. jesus would want us to torture, i mean "pressure" people.

I'm not a political person at all (which is why I'm a registered independent) but I had hoped that with one party in control that they could get SOMETHING done and effect some positive change. We've been fighting this war on terror for five years now, but I think the real war needs to fought at home. The war against our deplorable education, health, and economic problems. If we are going to be in the business of nation building then maybe we should start with our own. The republicans have been salivating for the chance to have control of both the presidency and congress and if this is all they had to offer then shame on them if they lose control after the midterm elections. They had their chance.

They got some things done, unfortunately they weren't positive.
