This post is timely for me b/c I almost called in sick on Monday (just b/c I didn't feel like going in) but decided to toughen it out so I can take some days off later on. I just started this job 2 months ago but waking up at 6:15 am everyday sucks. I think everyone goes through phases of hating their job to the point where you don't feel like working. In your case it sounds like you need to switch jobs and actually do something that interests you.
Sounds cool and all (your work ethic) but if you are in bed with a real illness such a ploy could be extremely agitating. I usually turn off my ringer, but I only call in when I am really sick.
Here's what I don't get... My wife NEVER misses work. She has acrued some 18 sick days. She missed this week due to Strep Throat (Mon-Wed.) per doctor's orders... the note, the prescription, the whole nine... About a month ago, her boss had let her go to a funeral for a bereavement day, and to the hospital for one day before that (for the same family tragedy). This is the most she's missed EVER in 3 years at the same place. 3 "instances." Today she is "written up" for missing time she has coming to her. What is that all about?
IROC It, would you please explain what is "written up" ??? Most of you Americans use this term loosely to explain when a boss gets upset with an employee, but I don't know what really means to get "written up." Is it a WARNING, a REPRIMAND, a caution? Does it have to include a paper actually "written up", or just a verbal warning, or what? Once I got in trouble for standing up to a manager here and, according to her "disagreeing with her in public", which is a no-no here. Everybody was asking me: "Did you get 'written up'?" I'm all: "I don't know what that means, man. I got a 'talking-to' from the main boss, but I don't know if I got 'written up'." So... what DOES IT mean, exactly (and in your wife's case)?
It's exactly what it says, Swoly. It's a written reprimand. At our company, if you receive three, you are terminated. IROC it, It would've been very hard for me not to walk out right then and there. I'd definitely be looking for a new job.
i was gonna post in this thread - but i've started to come down with something...don't think i'm gonna be able to make it...
Coolio on your "written up" explanation. I got it now. About your leaving because they did that to you... you wouldn't seek to fix that it doesn't happen again with someone else and straighten things out... you would quit? Sounds like you're walking AWAY from the problem instead of solving it. I'd raise hell in HR and send letters to the main man letting him or her know what goes on.
I HAVE worked for a small business. A small video store, no less. Everything was fair. I never called in sick, because I loved it, and when I was really sick, I showed up and showed them I was, and left. If you lie, then you get what's coming to you. I am sure there are fair employment laws that you can use in court to go against your argument. Are you saying they could do ANYTHING and you can't say anything about it?
Texas is a fire at will state. Employers don't need any reason to fire you and there is nothing you can do about it.
