so why is the luxury tax such a big concern? Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander ($1.2 billion) http://biz.yahoo.com/special/usrich06_article1.html
Thats true. But just look at Dallas, they are selling out and so is their merchandise cuz Cuban is commited $$$ to building a championship team.
If this is TRUE, then the cat is out of the bag!!!!!!!!!! No more cheap thoughts please Mr.Alexander, no more penny pinching , no more being so tight that we loose players like Mike James or Bonzi Wells because we have been low balling them! If it is true and this is a WIN NOW season then Les needs to pull out his wallet and make sure that Bonzi goes only to the Rockets. Les your fans are everywhere and watching every move you make
i wonder about that too. how much does a team win, in the NBA, depend on how much the owner spends? its obvious in baseball. look at the yankees. but in basketball, the prime example we have is isiah thomas. so lets exlude him becuase he is,well, isiah thomas. i am not very informed when it comes to payrolls and luxury tax. can someone help me out on this?
What luxury tax related fears have prevented us from having a better roster? I don't think adding guys like Jason Terry, Antoine Walker, KVH, etc. is going to help this team improve much. The problem isn't spending, it's been our drafting and crap trades and signings.
Man, did you notice that one couple who dropped out of the Forbes 400 because they gave 1 billion away to charities. I am starting the Old Man Rock foundation tomorrow. It will aid Old Rockets fans who would like to see another Rockets championship and buy a beachhouse on the Riviera.
And they're still bleeding money like there's no tommorrow. Basketball isn't a profitable sport. There are a handful of teams that turn a profit, and now that the Hornets and Clippers started spending money I don't even know if they make a profit anymore. Selling out arenas doesn't mean jack when it comes to the bottom line. Player salaries are so inflated when it comes to revenue that there is no way to win when it comes to being an owner.
That's why Les is a billionaire and you never will be. Simply spending more money will not produce results in any industry, including sports. If you think we low-balled Mike James, perhaps you'd be more comfortable cheering for the Knicks. Also, if you don't understand the salary cap don't comment on it. Les should pull out his wallet for Bonzi? How much is he allowed to spend on him total anyway? Yetti, I swear you care more about being preachy than you do about the team, or anything else for that matter.
But please do not forget that Les PROBABLY has the various segments of this enterprise set up under different Corporate entities. I would not be surprised at all if the Parking $'s and the Concession $'s never make it under the Rockets NBA umbrella but were instead totally separate companies that are profitable in their own right and are never counted in the revenue numbers that the Players Union is always trying to use to justify their share of the pie. A lot of big entities like this are set up this way - so even if after tickets and TV money Les is not making big money - the original Arena deal we voted on and passed to build TC guaranteed him a lot of profit each year from parking and concessions. And who knows where the uniform sales $'s end up - probably in another bank account.
Buy us a Bonzi to make up for all the suffering we have been through. Come on, do it. You know you want to. Bonzi can be reached at 1-800-KICKASS.
What happen to the report last year, that he was one of the poorest owners in the NBA? Those figures were no where near these numbers.
