My favorite cover song (well, one of them at least) is Motley Crue's cover of the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the U.K. 'Cause I Wanna be Anarchy! F*cking Destroy!!!!!!! I love that song. Makes me wanna break stuff.
Oh no lynus is going fred durst on us. he wants to break stuff. watch out for that guy. he might try and replace the "s" at the end of his handle with a "z". Lynuz, please don't do this.
The Cure's version of Purple Haze????? UUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! Just awful. Best covers of Hendrix: Chris Duarte-Drivin South Spin Doctor's-Spanish Castle Magic Seal and Jeff Beck-Manic Depression Living Colour-Crosstown Traffic M.A.C.C.- Hey Baby
How bout every hit that Abba ever had being covered by Erasure? (the A-Teens just need to be shot) I remember when I first heard Abba, I was like, "Hey! That's an Erasure song!"
OK, a few comments on some of your selections before I submit my own list. Yes, the Cure's version of "Purple Haze" is almost universally despised by Jimi fans, but the truth is, it reflects Jimi's interest in studio experimentation and is actually quite groovy. Also, you should hear The Cure's take on "Foxy Lady" from their first full-length Three Imaginary Boys. It's sounds like Robert and the boys are imitating how a Japanese band would play it. I haven't heard KMFDM's "Material Girl", but Bigod 20 did a great version of "Like a Prayer". And finally, Motley Crue doing "Anarchy in the U.K."? That's just wrong on so many levels. Now, my list (in no particular order): 10,000 Maniacs - Morrisey's "Everyday is Like Sunday" Low - Joy Division's "Transmission" The Ramones - "Spiderman Theme" The Cure - The Doors' "Hello, I Love You" Uncle Tupelo - Doug Sahm's "Give Back the Key to My Heart" Nine Inch Nails - Joy Division's "Dead Souls" God Lives Underwater - Depeche Mode's "Flies in the Windscreen" Moby - Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades" Joy Division - The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" Rage Against the Machine - Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" The The - Hank Williams' "I Saw the Light" Nirvana - Leadbelly's "In the Pines"
Since so much of jazz is cover material, I won't bother with that. I'll take... Note: Song - Artist (original artist) Moonage Daydream - Racer X (David Bowie) Madman Across the Water - Bruce Hornsby (Elton John) Brown Eyed Girl - Everclear (Van Morrison) I'm sure there are more I'll think of later.
Thanks for the concern DW, but don't fret. I'm not going Durst on anybody. That song reminds me of a rebellious youth. I grew up on all that kind of music, and I'm still a metal head. I was rather disappointed when I first heard the Pistols original version, but I got into them a bit later. Speaking of Limp Bizket, I love their version of George Michael's Faith. I like George Michaels as well.
Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy Hell, pretty much any blues sounding song that Led Zeppelin ever did is really a cover of someone. Hammer of the Gods is a great book about this band to read to learn more about some of the stuff they stole from previous blues artists.
Raven, Other British bands besides Zep had American R&B influences. Robert Plant turns 53 in a week. Mango
King's X "Manic Depression" Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground" Type O Negative "Summer Breeze" Type O Negative "Daytripper"
Ya know what was a really TERRIBLE cover: "Sweet Dreams are made of this" was redone by a band in the mid to latter 90s, I THINK it was NIN, but it may have been someone else. It was among the worst songs I've ever heard!
Yes, Marilyn Manson covered the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams." I like the original version, but I do NOT like the Manson version.
Although just about every British Invasion band (and all those that came after) stole from American blues artists, Led Zepellin was by far the worst offender. I'm somewhat confused by the topic - by definitive do you mean a version of a song that's better than the original or simply the best version of a song that isn't played by the original artist? Either way, my ironic choice (considering how much I dislike most country music) would be Willie Nelson's version of Always on My Mind, which was originally done by Elvis. The Elvis version is pretty hideous (he was in the fat man in a jumpsuit stage of his career), but Willie's has an understated delivery that keeps the song from being too sappy. Another cool cover is Tricky's version of Bad Day, which was obviously a rap song in its previous incarnation but the Tricky album doesn't indicate who the original artist was (that the publishing credit is different clued me in to the fact that the song wasn't Tricky's). BTW, Drivin' South was not originally a Hendrix tune.
Sub I guess what I originally meant was... A song that has become a "classic" or in the mainstream of pop culture. Sort of like when you hear it, you think "that is a great song". Everybody knows its a cover, but we associate that band with that song. so I guess "the best version of a song that isn't played by the original artist?" is what I meant
