A couple days ago I woke up feeling like utter crap.. sore throat, body aches, 102 fever.. I got an antibiotics shot yesterday, and that has calmed the fever some and numbed the body aches, but my throat remains sore. So sore in fact I can barely swallow. After checking the symptoms online it appears I might have tonsilitis.. I've never really heard of anyone getting their tonsils out at my age though (mid 20s).. usually this is diagnosed as a kid, right? But assuming I get them removed, can anyone here tell me what to expect? I've never really learned anything about it.. what is the procedure like? recovery time? etc.. Any info is appreciated.
Trying to diagnose yourself online is pointless, you keep going down the questions until you stop at cancer, it's a joke.. I’d give the shot and the meds a few more days and see how things are after that…
Well the symptoms for tonsilitis are pretty specific.. especially when the picture of infected tonsils online looks just like yours.. (taken from webmd) * Fever of 101 °F(38.3 °C) or higher (check) * White or yellow coating on the tonsils (N/A) * Swollen, tender tonsils (check) * Swollen lymph nodes in the neck (check) * Abdominal pain and headache (none) * Severe pain (body aches count?) * Severe difficulty swallowing (check) * Pain on only one side of the throat (check) Oh no, i have cancer??
I had my tonsils taken out in 2000 when I was 39. It was done as part of some other surgery I was having on my nose and throat. Surgery was done on a Monday morning. I spent one night in the hospital, then recovered at home the rest of the week, and was back at work the next Monday. You will have a sore throat for a couple of days, and you will learn to love popsicles.
Those are symptoms that are very common with Mono (EBV), CMV infection , cornyebacterium pharyngitis, gonnorheal pharyngitis, etc.... In other words, like a previous poster stated, don't self diagnose. P.S. If you do have tonsilitis, the shot (assuming it was antibiotic and not steroid) will work just fine.
It's not that big a deal. I had mine taken out 3 years ago at age 36, after getting deathly sick 3 times in a row. The first time, I came home from work and fell asleep sitting on the couch. I woke up with my dad shaking me. He had called and I was out of it, so he came over and took me to the doctor for the shot in the rump bit. That worked for a couple weeks, and it was right back on me again. THis time my wife took me to ER where we sat around half the night until the shot in the rump bit again. THat time the nurse had enough sense to tell me it was my tonsils acting up and it wasn't going to stop. So, I went to the ENT specialist, set up the outpatient surgery, went in in the morning and was out by 3 pm. Came home and ate jello and popsickles for a week and didn't talk much. But after that, it was fine, until the scabs fell off in my throat. They come loose first and kind of dangle in your throat, making you react cough as you breath and talk. Still no biggie. Not like all the horrible stuff I heard would happen because of my age.
first of all, tonsillitis is really not a specific diagnosis. all it literally means is that your tonsils are inflammed. this can be from bacterial infections like strep, viral infections (both common cold/flu viruses and EBV - the mono virus), also diptheria and gonorrhea are other possiblities. most adult docs will presume bacterial and give an antibiotic shot (whether you need it or not).... in teens MONO is a stong possibility if you don't get better. in infants usually just cold viruses. i agree in that just wait a few days and if persist go back and they may consider the mono test (bloodwork). its rare that people take out tonsils unless this becomes a recurrent issue. bronxfan MD....
This is something I forgot to mention in my initial post. I've had same episode happen about once every 2-3 months for a while now, each time it seems to get worse. This time was really, really bad. I've got an appointment thursday, hopefully I'll know something then.
I agree with Bronxfan. It is rare to have a tonsillectomy b/c there is a risk involved with the surgery. You need anesthesia and the risk of bleeding b/c of the anatomy of the throat/tonsils. I would wait until you have had 3-4 episodes of documented abx-dependant tonsilitis until you see the ENT. However, if you have PPO, you can just self refer.
Are you in Houston? If so, there's a virus going around that has symptoms very similar to this. I just got over it. The best thing you can do for it is to take mussinex to thin your muccus (which is what irritates your tonsils, in my case) and stay on a regular regiment of ibuprofen and plenty of hydration. Mine lasted about a week. It sucked until I got used to the medication. Eat soft foods and stay on the ibuprofen and you will be fine.
You'd make a crappy doctor, moe. But on the bright side you'd have a 100% cure rate and no waiting lines.
