The sequels thread inspired me. So, what are the definitive cover songs?

I'll start with a few…

David Bowie's cover of Lou Reed's "White lightning/White Heat"

Van Halen's cover of The Kink's "You really got me" (for that matter, Oingo Biongo's version is pretty good too!)

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child"

Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"

The Byrds' cover of Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages", "Mr Tambourine Man", "It's All Over Now Baby Blue"

Devo's cover of The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction"

Run DMC's cover of Aerosmith's "Walk this Way"

Bring em' on!

C'mon, MC! Any self respecting Cake fan has to put Cake's version of Gloria Gainer's "I Will Survive" up there...

*Sigh*...I really expected more of you, man....:)

No question, it was Hoversteak's slowed-down, vamped-out cover of "Teenagers From Mars". We broke new ground with that one.

What about the Lemonheads version of Simon&Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson"

Also I thought White LIGHT/ white heat was a velvet underground song.

maybe it is a different song. I don't know, I just don't know.

Orgy- "Bizarre Love Triangle" is good, although the original is a true 80's classic.

Solar Twin- "Rock the Casbah", done a couple of years ago.

Oasis- Has done a lot of them, but "c*m on feel the noize" and "Street Fighting Man" sound pretty good.

Aerosmith "Train Kept a Rollin"
Motley Crue "Smokin in the Boys Room"
Poison "Your Mama Don't Dance"
Guns N Roses "Knockin on Heaven's Door"
Great White "Once Bitten Twice Shy"
Quiet Riot "c*m on Feel the Noize"
Tesla "Signs"
Cheap Trick "California Man"
Cheap Trick "The Flame"
Van Halen "Pretty Woman"
Type O Negative "Cinammon Girl"
Megadeth "Paranoid"

Come on... The Velvet Underground is soooo much cooler than David Bowie (even though I like him too). And it was their song, not just Lou Reed's ;).

Good call on the Hendrix's cover of "Watchtower" though.

I liked The Cure's cover of Hendrix's "Purple Haze," myself, although it probably wasn't definitive ;).

Oh yeah, MC...I got Cake's new CD...very nice...

Next up, Motorcade of Generocity

GnR's version of "Live and Let Die" was pretty cool...

And, of course, the definitive 80's tune..."Venus", by Bananarama...(forgot who did the original, though)

As for new stuff, Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" is pretty wild...

Dave Matthews Band -- All Along the Watchtower . . . I believe the band has played this song more times in concert than any other . . . it's become a fan favorite, and is THE BEST song to end concerts with.

I don't know if he's done it often, but I saw Wyclef Jean do Redemption Song and it was awesome -- best cover of it that I've heard.

Also, Ben Harper occasionally plays Sexual Healing, and his version is AWESOME, much better than the original

yes i am really starting to enjoy alien ant farm..

great sound.

mc mark, is the song called white lightening /white heat or white light/white heat?

Also very very good call on All along the watch tower.

I have the DVD of Jimi's last concert at the island of weight and it has him playing AATWT with the flying V. So awesome.

Jimi and Bob Marely would have to be my favorite two musicians.

Aretha Franklin's "Respect" is actually a cover of Otis Redding. The original has a much different tone coming from a male P.O.V.

My pick is Sarah McLachlan's cover of "Dear God" by XTC, which is much better than the original.

Zebra has always been a favorite of mine. Check out their cover of the Beatles "Slow Down" on their debut album Zebra.

Megadeth's cover of Black Sabbath's Paranoid is pretty good.

Sepultura's cover of Symptom of the Universe and White Zombie's cover of Children of the Grave kick butt, too.

Daryl you are totally right!

It is White light/White Heat.

I am a silly boy!

Just thought of another one.

Prince's cover of Joan Osbourne's "One of Us"

sonic youth - superstar (the carpenters)
weezer - dukes of hazard theme
superdrag - metro (and their version of the pixie's "wave of mutilation" is worth hearing...)
the gourds - gin and juice (snoop dogg) - this one's funny, not necessarily better...

if i were at home with my music i could think of more...

you guys are stepping on my toes by saying some of these covers are better than the originals, but i will let it die cause it's a matter of opinion...(except for ben harper's sexual healing being better than marvin gaye's! you're wrong wrong wrong, you're just wrong!) ;)

btw, jack black does a pretty good cover of "let's get it on" at the end of high fidelity, and his band tenacious d does a "kick-ass" version of the theme from "flash gordon," and a terrible version of "barracuda," with sasquatch on the drums.

I have never heard a Madonna song sound so dark and angry.

Is that like String Cheese Incident's version of "Gin and Juice"? It's got a bluegrass tune to it -- I love it! :)

Dude, ya gotta hear the BH version -- it's awesome to hear that slide guitar in it
