Ok Ok Ok...... Misconception Number 1 about Rice is that he is only a shooter. That is B*$#^%&*#$ if you have watched him before. He was stiffled as a Knick. I remember when Jordan was still playing, Rice challenged him for the scoring title. Ask anyone that watched Rice in his Charlotte years. Rice has a solid post up game. Not great, but I do remember him being good in the low post. But man the matchups we could create putting Rice at Pf on the small lineup. We lose a stopper and gain a scorer.

Now I am in no way endorsing this move. I dont like the huge cap salary or the fact that he is older than most. I checked out his stats on ESPN.com and his Fg has been consistant pretty much every year in the league. He gets about 5 boards. I would say that he could get 11-16 ppg in our system.

Rice Assets- Good Shooter/Zone killer, Veteran/leader/Decent rebounding for Sf.

    Rice Bad stuff-Old, Bad contract,

Dammit im drunk, but I come home and see this hole Rice thing and I see great things happening if we get him. Call me psychic or drunk I dunno

    Have a nice night.

I think that the zone defense will help Glen Rice on defense b/c ppl like steve and the cat can help him out when he's in trouble. This could work out.

    Maybe you're psychic when you're drunk :D

One drunk to another, I can see how this could work out, especially running a small team with the new rules. But if it interferes with our chances to get a real C (even a backup-quality one), then I think we screwed up. It will make us nearly 100% reliant upon Cato to have a breakout year, IMO, which I wouldn't bet a nickel on.

That said, we could do worse.

Rice scored almost 17 ppg in 99-00 with the Lakers, and that was with Shaq AND Kobe both hogging all the shots. Rice could duplicate that sort of scoring performance with the more wide-open Rockets offense. Steve could be racking up a lot more assists this year!

I agree with everything said in this thread...

With the new zone rules, man-to-man stoppers like SA are going to be somewhat obsolete... While 3 pt shooters will be a premium...

This move is simply a move for the new rules...

Now, if we had the old rules, there's no way in this trade is an option...

HOW is this guy a leader!?!? He has moaned and complained on EVERY team he's ever been on....On every team except Charlotte he complained (and complained...and complained...) about not getting enough shots...even when they won a Championship, he...surprise!...complained. The only team where he was no. 1, he had a great stretch, stat-wise, but was onn up to his old tricks, although now he COMPLAINED about having too much pressure, and not enough talent on the team to take the pressure off him....Ergo, whwn he's the no. 1 option: Complain about too much pressure. When he's NOT the no. 1 option: Complain about lack of touches.

He may be a veteran, but that sure doesn't make him a leader...it just makes him old.

When I read the thread title, I was sure the first post would start: Well, he doesn't play defense...

I really can't see the point for the Rockets in getting Glen Rice. He is a good shooter, and in the past, he has shown a varied offensive game, but his play has gone downhill, he never played any defense to begin with, he is too old for such a young team and he doesn't exactly help the team with it's prime need of size.

I have nothing against getting Rice, except for his fat contract. I can see good things happening to the Rockets from getting Rice. :)

But true, what would Griffin's role be if we really get Rice?

pure genius: With the new zone defense, Glen Rice will be the Glen Rice of old, mark my words! CD is always a step ahead of all of us. With Bullard signing most probably opting to sign with Charlotte Hornets and Walt on his way to Washington, Rice gives us the ultimate zone killer..Come trade deadline time, we'll have contenders eating out of our hands trying to get some "steam" rice! The truth of the matter is with Franchise and Cat in the backcourt, we're pretty much unstoppable anyway!!!

This isn't about the zone defense. We already have zone busters in Bullard, Williams, Mobley, and Francis. This is about having a post up game in the 4th quarter. Which is something we don't have.

it's way too early to start beating rice. maybe we don't get him at all. maybe he'd be terrific fit. when player does't fit into the team, then his stats fall, he starting complain...... even othella was whiner, when he was in vancouver. but lot of us wants him back. i say : let's wait and see what will happen

I like the idea about getting him for trade bait later on. Shandon does not have much trade value right now, and shows no sign of gaining in trade value while he is with the rockets.

Rice, on the other hand, should be excellent trade bait for teams at the trade deadline who have found a need for a zone-buster. There may not be centers on the market now, but who knows about later on?

I like this as a player management move as well. We keep our shining reputation as a team that treats players well and keeps its promises. Notice that both Hakeem and Shandon seem to want to leave. This is especially important with Shandon given the way that he signed with us.

In the meantime, we are saying to Cato - you are the man, giving him one last chance. We trade a player who can't hit open threes for one who can, actually a very nice move with the zone coming. The only downside is his salary, which will be movable, unlike Cato's.

I never have liked Rice (and his whining wife), but I guess I'll have to reserve judgement until I watch him play with the rockets (assuming this goes through).

Well, it seems like old zone busters and young defensive stoppers are going at about the same rate these days ;).

Seriously, coaches really seem to believe in the mantra "defense wins championships." I think that teams are just as likely to trade for a "stopper" as a "shooter" at the deadline.

When do we get to trade him for Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell? Or Alonzo Mourning?

I don't know how well Rice would fit in here, and he is not a great defensive player. I would rather keep S.A. and Bull, then take Rice and his huge contract.

Rice at 9 mil / year

Shandon at ~5.5 mil a year

Bullard at Charlotte for ~4.5 mil a year (as reported)

    Rice is actually less...

If we trade Wiz to Wiz for White, we have actually traded 3 small forwards for Rice and White and saved a mil a year. I'll take Rice over any one of the three any day (though ya gotta hate losin' Bull)
