Did anybody think that Elie had coaching potential when he played here? I never expected this guy to be a coach.

DoD u r soooo stoopid, the ideal RoX staff would be a five man posse of Hakeem the Dreem, Moses Mylone, and Kareem Abdul Jabbalcindor working in 8 hour shifts wyping Yao's booty and then Mario Elie and Calvin Murphy coaching home and away games respectively - they tried to dooo this but LESSSS and JVANStoopid turned them down. , I KNOws this cuz I knows coaching and dats Ewing is teh suxxors BOO knixxxxxx!!!!

what should a guy show. all kinds of players become coaches. mario is supposedly a pretty smart guy, speaks several languages. he was a pretty smart player, a good defender. maybe he wasn't well spoken in your opinion and I can understand that, but he is pretty smart from what I remember. and obviously from his career, he is hard working, not the most talented guy.

It's not just what a guy should show, but how he's spoken of. For example, there are guys coaches talk about having great basketball IQ, a knowledge of the game, sees plays unfolding ahead of time, etc. I mean yeah, in most of those cases, they're talking about guys that suck as players, but... I never really heard any of those about Mario. With Mario it was always - he's a hardnosed player, he's a tough defender, etc.

An example for me would be Avery Johnson. A lot of people talked about him as a player acting like a coach. He was "the Little General". He was always vocal after every play. You could see him walking up to Tim Duncan or some other player after a play and pointing out what could have been done, what should have been done, or what should be done next time down the court. He was coaching. The Dallas coaching staff also spoke highly of him even when he was a player.

Don't get me wrong - I love Mario Elie. He was tough, he was a major reason why we have a championship, and he was a blue-collar kind of guy that exemplifies what Houston is. But I never in my wildest dreams thought to myself, "Mario sure would be a great coach someday". I'm not saying he won't, can't, or isn't... just that I never got that feeling from him.

    Can Mario Ellie Come Home?

It looks like Ellie is out at Golden State. Any possibility that he can join the Rockets in some capacity? I thought he was a pretty hot coaching prospect not too long ago. Maybe Van Gundy is leery about hiring his possible replacement...

not unless he grew 5 inches, gained 50 pounds, lost 10 years, and can now play with his back to the basket, and willing to take the league min.

If mario could come in, and somehow, some way, instill his type of "heart" into our current players, we would be exponentially better

    Ellie, Horry, Cassell, Drexler!!!! Yes!!!

Forget Kenny Smith! He owes his career to Houston, but has shown very little appreciation to his days as a Rocket and has demonstrated no loyalty at all.

All I'm saying it any head or assistant coach has to have his troops. These players are adults making millions of dollars, just because a coach is a tough guy with great discipline and maybe experience/reputation as a highly professional NBA player doesn't mean his players turn into tough professional guys magically.

Nate McMillan is as tough as they get, still, Darius Miles and Zach Randolph acted liked a couple of fruit cake 6 year olds. Avery Johnson was an extremely smart player and a great coach, but Erick Dampier is still semi-r****ded. The list goes on and on.

Les needs to offer Mario a 1 yr retainer to keep on the payroll for when JVG fails us all this season. That way we can sign Mario as a Head Coach for the 07/08 season. That way we can get rid of the old Knick bench and reload with former Rockets champs.
