we have a winner! well, except the "whatever they want" part. They can pay up to a max, but they can go over the cap to retain their own players.

That and the lottery, and also, remember that the max is different between the current team and other teams. It's to try to keep players at their own teams and not have teams like NY or Dallas try to buy a championship with their careless overspending.

It's the same reason as to why NY would not just wait for the FA market to try to lure all the REAL stars to their teams. They had to use trades because they're over the cap.

jingle77, no offense but in the context of this thread similie is either brilliant or hilarious. :D

Seriously, what do you do when you can't do anything and don't even have a prayer of breaking the rules? Hmmm... the "head in the sand" thing is an option but I'd hope we could be more creative.

To me, this is a Clutch (City) Fan Golden Moment.

Don't get me wrong, the roster as is really wipes out 80% of the criticism I have about JVG and I see possible championships 2 or 3 years from now. I'm not sure it was voluntary, but $,$$$.000s and reps don't grow on trees.

So what should ask Les or CD/Morey to do with a roster full of negligible trade-bait?

It's a fun question, and I'm disappointed in myself for not coming up with a great one-liner here.

But I do firmly believe that if a championship is possible in the next 5 years it's all about Yao. If T-Mac wants to prove he's healthy and as good as Kobe we and JVG are in trouble.

Amazing, I found myself have learnt more from the disscussion in this thread than any other single thread. Although I have followed as mang rockets games as possible in the past few years(mostly via internet), I have to admit I have some blind spots when it comes to Bascket ball. And the NBA rules of acquiring players is certainly one of them. Giving the unique composition of rockets fans, I am quite sure I am not the only one benifiting from reading this thread.

kudos to those who spend their time to explain the cencerned rules in great detail. It is appreciated.

BTW, candlegreen, although we exchanged a couple of posts, some of the aggressive words in my post were not directed at you ;)

Wow, I hope this is one of our Chinese members who is using dictionary.com to translate this sentence into English. Otherwise I fear for the future of the English language. I know we all have our occaisional misprints and grammatical errors but... wow, just wow. Maybe, Jingle77 should stick to using the number 2 in place of the word to, two or too. At least then he would just appear lazy instead of stupid. This guy should be blocked form starting anymore threads until he completes his GED.

Thats funny since you can't spell BONER right......once again shouldn't technically you be communicating through NAVAJO? Education is a never ending process, maybe you could learn a little sensitive training.

    :p

For the record it was a nickname given to me by my dead grandmother and due to her condition it was the best she could do annunciation-wise. She used to say to me "Little Boniero coma her and-a give your-a Gramma a kiss". But you're surely not comparing my dead grammies poor annunciation to "Just pay damning tax and get our champion team". Hopefully Jingle77 isn't in China (then I'll feel bad) otherwise I'll see you in sensitivity class. :D

Now you can see whom the language make sense to . ;)
There are always Somebody who just care about the language , the birthday, the GFs/wives..., except the real problem of Rockets. I feel pity for that, but still respect your interest anyway . :)

Great idea! Let's tank the season after less than 15 games for an inknown commodity. Not Smart!

Thanks for the experienced Fans and their excellent analysis.
I still have something to consult and learn from this thread, before I was blocked by those guys who I respected :D . There are an ostrich's questions :

    1) On this season, We feel the efficiency of money from $5,393,300 for Shane Battier, $12,455,000 for Yao Ming, $1,800,000 for Span . Can we keep that efficiency and enlarge the payroll to fix the holes of Rockets under the rule of salary cap ? It is ok if there are no way about it. We will wait for the magic exchange of CD/Morey ,the Exceptions of next year and also the magic work of JVG.

2)If the team pay some players through other ways ( like sponsors), what is the result. I am curious about it.

    Thanks.

You prefer opportunity cost over opportunity LOST? LMAO...ur too conservative. And don't tell me the opportunity cost for MJ is a lot because who the heck did we get for midlevel exception close to MJ's skill level? I still think MJ talks a lot but if he was offered it he would have joined houston. Who cares if MJ isn't a likeable guy? he brings the goods. You wont give mike james a bonus if he is traded again early in his contract. That's the difference between Houston and DAllas; and it made a big gap the last couple years. They treat their players+role players WELL. Pay well, budget's are high but it's necessary. But you would rather keep Alexander's money in his pocket until crowds don't come because of underachievements.
It's 15 strong not 3-5 strong. Hey and I'm a rockets fan too.

Maybe you should worry about your own English!

"Wow, I hope this is one of our Chinese members who is using dictionary.com to translate this sentence into English."

The agreement rule says that the VP in the "who"clause should agree with
"our Chinese members", not "one of our Chinese members". In this case, you should change "who is using dictionary.com" to "who are using dictionary.com".

You are right! You do have a reason to fear for the future of the English language.

    BTW, I am a Chinese.

Isn't there such a concept called "delayed subject-verb agreement" when it comes to the usage of adjective clause?

I don't know if I am improvising right now, but I seem to recall vaguely I read it somewhere. Or maybe I see enough people use it this way that it becomes acceptable.

In any case, you grammar experts out there, feel free to correct me.

I remember on a website answering questions about the salary cap. I think the answer to that question is that technically you can do that, but what kind of sponsors would be willling to do such a thing. Also, if the NBA finds out about it, they will....erm.....do something but not too sure what. probably disallow the contract and let the player be a free agent.

Why are you telling people to correct themselves when you can't even spell words you should have learnt in elementary school?

Sponsorship, and getting compensation outside of the player contract which counts against the cap is strictly illegal in the NBA. Keep in mind that the CBA is (hopefully) negotiated by some of the best lawyers in the profession. There are very few loopholes that can be exploited legally. As of the current CBA, you're not even allowed to have a player-coach, because of the ability to pay a coach whatever you want.

The league takes contract tampering very seriously. The Joe Smith penalty to Minnesota crippled that franchise. The only thing remotely close to what you are suggesting would be the Anthony Carter situation in 2003, when Carter (a University of Hawaii alum!), "forgot" to pick up his $4 million dollar option with Miami; it's basically the equivalent of Juwan Howard "forgetting" his player option in 2008; there's no way he was worth the money. AC's agent ended up picking up the tab, and the Heat had enough cap space to sign Lamar Odom.

In any case, this thread should really die; as much fun as it is to educate people about the CBA (I like to think of it as chopping down redwoods of ignorance), I doubt many people will be willing to read through 5 pages of bad English to come to the conclusion that Houston can't realistically do any major player moves.

Finally, to finish, I congratulate ChenLi on a fine grammatical analysis (with your first post, too), wnes's grammar is correct in his sentence, but based on a different interpretation than what you are thinking.

"Wow, I hope this is one of our Chinese members who is using dictionary.com to translate this sentence into English."

The clause "who is using dictionary.com to translate this sentence into English" is referring to the "one" of the previous clause. Your interpretation would be correct if he was referring to "our Chinese members," but due to his protest, I would assume that was not his attention.

And to think, I'm not even an English professor. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
