LONDON (August 9, 2001 2:43 p.m. EDT) - The University of Birmingham, one of Britain's leading universities, will offer an honors degree in golf to help develop the sport's next generation of superstars.

It plans to team up with the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) to offer the degree, thought to be the first partnership of its kind in the world.

The three-year degree in Applied Golf Management Studies will see 25 would-be professionals combining academic studies with tuition in every aspect of the game from September next year.

"This course is designed to ensure that those capable of academic study, who also exhibit special sporting skills, are capable of achieving their potential in both spheres," said Martin Toms, program leader for the degree at the University's School of Education.
