People don't like Kandi because they expect him to play as a starter. However, looking at his career stats like and his height, he would be a good fit for 5-10 mins a night of the bench behind yao. Specially for the vet. minimum. AND don't forget thats 6 fouls against Shaq!
if kandi can put up stro like numbers for the vet min im all for takeing him. We just need him for a season till we can pick up a half way decent backup c/pf.
I agree...the numbers aren't bad at all. And as bad as everyone says he is, his rebounding numbers would be a welcome addition, along with his girth. For cheap, I'd definitely sign him to solidify the 4 spot.
At 30 years old, don't hold your breath for that upside. "Potential" simply means you are currently a really bad player. Kandi at the min contract would be fine and we could use him as a backup.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/olowomi01.html As a 7 footer with decent atheleticism who plays in the paint, one would expect Kandiman to have at least some decent FG% stats even if he isn't a prolific scorer, right? Wrong.. his career TS% is a pathetic .458. Even the horribly bad-shooting Rafer Alston had a .475 TS% last season. The inefficient Juwan Howard had a .499 TS% last year, having spend a big chunk of the season being forced to play option #1 due to injuries and forcing a lot of shots. The guy can rebound a little (9.8 per 40 minutes last year), though that's not saying much since that's about his only job on the court. He hasn't been a good shot blocker and fouls a ton. He also does not take care of the ball, turning it over 2.7 times per 40 minutes, even though he only scores 12 or so points per 40 minutes for his career. His +/- stats (unadjusted) also hasn't been great. He's had negative +/- in 3 of the last 4 season. The numbers kind tells you that the guy simply hasn't bothered to learn to play basketball during his 8 years in the league.
The guy has talent, but his attitude can destroy our chemistry,so the answer is --it would be great if suns did takes him, which means finally they got some useless player...
I think you are spending too much time analyzing a backup center that will play behind Yao Ming and sign for a minimum contract. What else are you expecting for a minimum contract? We don't have $$$ to spend so we should snatch up Cato or Kandi and be happy about it. We can make upgrades via trade or next season. For this season, we need an able body that won't be an utter disaster like Rod Stricland was. I love Mutumbo but he simply can't match-up against the "centers" in the new NBA like Amare. At least Cato and Kandi have the foot speed and body to stay in front of Amare. Deke would get eaten alive by Amare. God help us should Deke get switched off onto a forward or guard. Yikes.
wow candy-man can make 5.2 mill per just for being 7' and worhless at basketball. DAMNIT WHY WONT I GROW haha
My rant is really directed at Kandi and Kandi only... Cato at least gets his garbage points somewhat efficiently. His career TS% is alsmost 100 points higher than Kandi's pathetic .458 http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/catoke01.html Cato is an option I'd consider if he can be had for the remaining 2.1 mil MLE or the vet min, but I really don't think Kandi will be a good fit for this team. Van Gundy is all about smart/efficient play and hard work, Kandi's career so far seems to be the opposite of that.
Your analysis is definately valid regarding Kandi. I'm just not that worried about it. I imagine Kandi would get garbage minutes or sub in for injuries. And if Yao gets injured, Kandi's worthlessness is irrelevant because we won't make the playoffs anyway if Yao is out a significant amount of time. For a dirt cheap contract, I say sign him up. bury him on the bench for all I care. I just like the idea of having one more big body on our bench for spot minutes. Kandi would be fine for that. Think of it this way, if we don't sign Kandi or Cato, what is our options? 1. We won't sign anybody else. 2. We pick up some NBDL player (who obviously won't be better than Kandi).
I agree...we need to compare him to Mutombo and see what we get because thats the spot he will be playing eventually; thats with Yao increasing his minutes year after year. And as much as i hate saying it...a 30 something Kandi is the same as 50 year old Mutombo, if not better.
I think he's asserting that Kandi Man is a NEGATIVE on the court and having nobody or an NBDL player is superior to having Olowokandi. Based on the efficiency numbers, this (unfortunately for Kandi) is not unfounded. Besides, not all NBDL players suck, Rox got a pretty good one last year in Hayes and may have another good one in JL3.
Last time I checked, JL3 isn't a 7 footer. Hayes isn't either. He can't player center. How many 7foot NBDL'ers with any game are out there to be had? Having NOBODY play center seems like that might be a tad bit more negative than Kandi. Just guessing though. In the event of an injury, our center options currently are Mutombo, Hayes and Juwan Howard. I just can't imagine how having Kandi would be worse than those three options as our starting center or available as a backup. I realize folks don't like Kandi but we don't have any $ and our current options are frightening. We need something. Kandi is cheap. Pick him up and focus on getting good shooters.
Well, if Yao injured/sitting means Rockets suck up front, why not give Haryasz the minutes to suck? At least he might turn into something later, unlike Kandi, who still makes rookie mistakes as an 8 year vet. Cato, on the other hand, I'd consider to come off the bench at the 4 or the 5, depending on matchups. He's shown he could play effective basketball for Van Gundy and I don't think he's washed up yet at age 31. He simply struggled with a shoulder injury last season.
We'll see. I doubt JVG wants either one of them, honesty, because of the no knucklehead rule. Both are underacheivers and JVG has very little respect for players like that. Personally, get either one if you can get'em cheap. If not, move on. I don't really care. I'd just prefer to have another big body available on the bench and Kandi is a better scorer, rebounder and younger than Cato. But they both pretty much suck so it doesn't really affect much whether to you do or don't sign these guys. I want shooters. Did I say I want shooters?
Mario needs to go from defense to offense and become a running back...thats the only way I will be ok with him as a munber 1 pick. I'd pay to see him run the ball just once in an actual game. it would be hilarious.
