Former Texas governor Ann Richards dies By KELLEY SHANNON, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060914...eElBVSs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OTB1amhuBHNlYwNtdHM- AUSTIN, Texas - Former Gov. Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died Wednesday night after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73. She died at home surrounded by her family, the spokeswoman said. Richards was found to have esophageal cancer in March and underwent chemotherapy treatments. She said she entered politics to help others — especially women and minorities who were often ignored by Texas' male-dominated establishment. "I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' I think I'd like them to remember me by saying, 'She opened government to everyone,'" Richards said shortly before leaving office in January 1995. She was governor for one term, losing her re-election bid to Republican George W. Bush, otherwise known as the "Good ol' days".

i certainly wasn't a big fan of hers, but she made some gains and she was a huge texas politician. she'll be missed.
Damn. This is a real tragedy for Texas and all Texans. She was unique in that Texas sort of way, that those from out of state haven't a clue about, but those of us who are native or longtime Texans recognize... something genuine to the state that even those who might disagree with Governor Richards could appreciate. I could say a lot more about her, but I'll stop, keep this from D&D territory, and say that she will be missed by me. I'm glad I got to meet her. Many here have no idea just what we've lost. Not too many, I hope. She was a Texas treasure. Rest in peace, Ann. A true Texan, who loved her state and it's people, more than life itself.
I loved Gov. Richards. I spoke with her once when I worked for an answering service YEARS ago and one of our clients was the New York Times Houston bureau. She was SO incredibly nice. One of the all time great Texas women. She will be missed.
+ Q.E.P.D. Gobernadora Richards. Watch the Clutch City tapes. She's cheering on my Rockets on the sidelines. R.I.P.
I generally view tragedies as when someone dies young. Ann Richards was getting up there in the years anyways.
She was larger than life. I was in LA during her heyday, but I watched in admiration from afar. Rest in Peace, Ann Richards.
Great words Deckard. They really capture my thoughts on this better than I could express. RIP Gov. Richards.
