Reading Clutch's thread about the second Matrix got me thinking about movies that have a sequel better than the original. Although I think that it would be difficult for the sequel (Matrix) to be better, I think that it can be done. With that aside, what sequels have you all seen that were better than the original?

Sequels that I can think of that were better:

Terminator 2
The Empire Strikes Back (but Return of the Jedi was the best!)

As a lot of posters have said, Rush Hour 2 is better than the original. I also thought that Hannibal was better than Silence of the Lambs, but for that, I'm in the minority. Terminator 2 was a great choice!

Wow, I thought I was the only one that thought Jedi was better than Empire...

Anyways, Empire Strikes Back wasn't a sequel, it was the second part of a trilogy...Didn't you watch Scream 2

The reason Empire doesn't count as a "sequel" is because it doesn't really have an ending...There are so many loose ends to be tied up, that you know there HAS to be a third one...The Star Wars trilogy is simply a really long movie sliced into three parts...

A traditional "sequel" may have the same characters, but the plot is totally different, and the villain is usually different, too...

There IS a difference :)

Word on Terminator 2, also...one of the best sequels ever

I thought Lethal Weapon 2 was good.
Beverly Hills Cops 2 (which I saw first) was good as well.

I can think of 3 from this summer alone:

Mummy Returns
Scary Movie 2
Rush Hour 2

I also like Hannibal better as well.

I think the whole sequel worse than the original idea is wrong. The third Indiana Jones was the best, Empire was easily the best of the Trilogy. I think that all the movies following Clerks (even though it was awesome, and I don't know if you can really call those sequels) were better. Die Hard 2 and Terminator 2 were also better than the originals. I also preferred the sequels of Back to the Future, Rocky, Toy Story and The Godfather. Sure there have been some crappy ones, but to say that they all suck is just wrong.

None of the sequels mentioned is better than the original in my opinion.

I thought Superman 2 was better than the original. And I liked Wayne's World 2 better than the first one.

Whoa... I can't believe no one thought of this:

TOY STORY 2...!

Seriously... the first one was cute, but the second one was very, very good... I was suprised...

I can't believe you think that any Rocky II-V could be better than the original. Rocky was one of the best acted movies I have ever seen from Sly Stalone.

Both of the Mummy movies sucked horribly. But out of the two the first was better.

Yes maybe Godfather II was probably better than the original Godfather but III absolutely sucked.

Scary Movie 2 was better than 1.

And as the Kevin Smith movies go. Clerks was the best.

He made them out to be different type of movies.

Clerks...the breakthrough film gaining recognition.
Mallrats...The comedy.. the new version of porky's
Chasing Amy... The drama..the worst also
Dogma.. Religious.. Sac-religious
Jay and Silent Bob Strike back... The action adventure movie.

Clerks was the best.

--37! My girlfriend sucked 37 d****
--in a row

classic.

I totally forgot about the Spy Who Shagged Me! What a trip. Mini Me, Fat b*stard, Felicity Shagwell...

American Pie 2 looks like it will make me cry laughing.

Sequels that I have heard sucked, but never went to see because I heard that sucked:

Speed 2
Jurassic Park 2 & 3

T2 is the best sequel. Bottom Line.

Close seconds:

Back to the Future 2 (equal to the original)

Rush Hour 2

Aliens (equal to the original)

Godfather II (equal to the original)

Best Indiana Jones - Temple of Doom

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

Rocky II and IV were good also (cant beat Rocky 1 though)

Die Hard 3 (equal to the original)

Austin Powers II (equal to the original)

Cant wait for T3 or Matrix 2/3. I have also heard about Back to the Future 4/5... www.bttf.com

I didn't know Mallrats, Chasing Amy, etc. were considered "sequels". I thought they were just different movies with some of the same characters. Anyway, I liked Clerks the best too.

I know Rocky is the more critically acclaimed movie, but my favorites are still III and IV.

Superman II rules too.

You *HAVE* to be kidding me. Some of the jokes in this movie were from movies that didn't do too well, so half of the audience had no clue about why they were funny...

WAY too many "Dude! Where's My Car?" jokes. The only one I understood was the RAY! ****ED ME! part, and it wasn't even funny.

I laughed all the way through the 1st, and in the 2nd the only time I really really laughed was when they did the rap song.
