Exactly the point. The three times the Rox trained at the Texas A&M University at Galveston they won two world championships and made it to the Western Conference finals. Not bad. Because there was nothing to do they focused on basketball and molded themselves into a world class team. And they left a lasting impression on the Galveston community. To this day Rudy T sponsors golf and fishing tournaments on the island. The proceeds from these events fund scholarships for local students to attend colleges and universities in the Galveston Bay area. And a number of former Rockets own vacation homes in Galveston and as of last report have learned how to fish and crab. Here's an idea. Rockets, why not once again train at Texas A&M University at Galveston, leave the island as a focused and determined basketball team and once again put H-town on top of the basketball world.
i heard they fixed up Galveston now with resort style condos and hotels. All they have to do now is to dye the brown water blue and sweep up all the jellyfish.
The Rockets are training in Austin from Oct. 4th - 7th and then returning to Houston for the rest of camp. I am sure they will be staying at one of the posh hotels in downtown Austin, i.e. The Hilton, Omni, Four Seasons, or Driskill.
What is also amazing is to think of the start their season got off to immediately following those Galveston training camps. One was a 15 + game win streak, and the other was a 9 game win streak if I remember correctly. Those are good results coming out of the Galveston training camp.
And Clutch lived in Austin for years, until recently. I can't believe people are carrying on about where you live being some requirement for true Rockets fandom. I've lived in Austin since 1980, but I'm a native of Houston, and old enough to remember all our professional teams coming to the city. That said, I sure wish there was a way to get into a practice!
I didn't know the Rockets website already had a story on it. I emailed one of the Chronicle writers last week when I saw this thread and he told me about it. I emailed one of my contacts in the basketball office at Texas and she hadn't heard of anything official at that time. I will probably email the office back and get some more scoop! I used to work with the Texas team my senior year, so maybe I can get into practice, even though they are closed. However, I think all the practices in Austin are during the week. Just checked....only Oct. 7th is on the weekend (Saturday). AzCkR - go check it out if you can. You won't have access, but maybe you can see some of the players after their practice is done/around Austin.
Or in Waco....not that I was around when they played in Waco. However, the Rockets played in a variety of venues when they first came to Houston.
Real fans dont have to be proud of kenny smith or listen to gene and jim a real fan is any person whose favorite team is the rockets and someone that gives their full support to the rockets thats a real fan
Truism - being a fan is a personal experience, no one can define it for anyone else. If you say you are a fan, you ARE ! DD
Believe it or not I have seen blue water in Galveston (and not in the swimming pools), but it doesn't happen very often. Try SPI for blue water in Texas.
