Didnt he do jack at the start of college football. He was bad for four games and then he started to shine towards the end. Is that going to be the same case in the pros this year or is he really that bad. He seemed pretty passive and extremely ineffective during the game along with making a mistake or two that were costly. Is he just learning the system and waiting to blow out?
im no scout or expert, but watching him play against NFL caliber linemen, he doesn't have any type of "move" or first step. He's definately not as quick as Jevon Kearse today, and seems not as strong as he looks. He was getting swallowed up today. I think he almost got to the quarterback once. Pretty weak showing. All in all, I think it may take him awhile to "get it", but I don't think he'll be anywhere near Bush's level. Julius Peppers my *ss
I think he'll get better as he goes on. He is still pretty raw and only relying on his strength and size. I think as he continues to get acclimated with the NFL and learns technique, he'll become more and more like the DE the Texans saw when drafting him. One game is no measure of a player (um hello, Yao).
But he's NO REGGIE BUSH and I dont think he's even near a JULIUS PEPPER Texans had 2 #1 pick and ended up with Carr/Mario with a chance to get Pepper or Bush
Williams gets double-teamed all day by one of the best lines in the league. The Texans overall have a better pass rush than they have had, well ever. Bush has a pretty good game against the Browns. Now you want to throw Williams under the bus?
Huh? Did you watch the game? He wasn't double teamed all day. The pass rush was about as bad as its ever been. McNabb could have sat back there in a recliner with a beer and still never gotten sacked.
i'm in no way giving up on mario or declaring him a bust, but as a number one pick it's not unreasonable at all to expect more from him even in game one. i think he'll be fine but it was absolutely dissapointing watching him today.
This didn't actually happen. Nor did this. But still, it is only one game, so we all have to wait and see how it works out.
I saw a couple of clips of him on ESPN from the Eagles game, he looks slow and doesn't have that explode off the ball that you want in a pass rusher. Is this guy projected to be a work in progress project cause someone like Jevon Kearse would run rings around him and Kearse was picked at 16th in the first round.
Is everyone in here retarted?!?!? The guy has played (1) one NFL game. Unfortunately he didn't make 15 tackles and 5 sacks, but give the guy a break.
I'm a little worried that Mario may be too slow to be a DE. He seems to play the position like a DT. Time will tell, I guess. I'm not willing to call him a bust after just 1 game, but then again, I'm just a homer...
i don't know. 1st pick of the NFL draft and a $55 million contract? I guess he does deserve a break. im "retarted"
Team Mario: it's just one game and he sees double teams, give him time. Team We F***ed Up: the above argument would have a lot more merit if we were talking about a second or third round pick. I'm sorry, but the #1 pick in the draft (especially when you're not talking about a skill position) is held to a high standard. He doesn't look dismal, no one's calling him a bust (or at least, they shouldn't be). But he struggled breaking free from blockers. He's not strong enough (yet) to knock them aside, and his quickness/explosiveness was not impressive at all. Didn't show any footwork or swim moves to get around guys. He's the second best defensive rookie on his own team, and that's just not acceptable. At all. He'll get better, but he (and those in his corner) is going to have to deal with the massive weight on his shoulders to justify that pick. I didn't want Reggie so much, I didn't think Young was an answer, but you need to move the pick for whatever you can get for it if you're not taking a true #1 guy. Evan
honestly, i don't want to pile on. but i don't think it's asking too much to have the #1 pick put SOME pressure on the QB. i realize it's one game. and i'm not making blanket statements. but the guy had a bad game yesterday. he wasn't double-teamed often and he had zero impact. last night on channel 13's post-game coverage spencer tillman and bob allen were commenting on how the offensive lineman was standing him straight up over and over again. that's not good.
i see your boy Vince Young is lighting up the league. on a more serious note, i wasn't impressed but i'll be patient with him.
That's why I'm confused about all this "at least he was double teamed talk." He wasn't double teamed. 1 on 1 and he couldn't generate any push whatsoever. Seriously, the guy looked bad out there. So bad that he was benched for stretches of the 2nd half.
