Ok apparently you CANT choose to go to whatever Community College you want to in Houston. My GF is trying to register at Houston Community College (the one at 10 and the Beltway next to Chilis) which is literally a mile away from her house. Apparently this is "out of district". What?? She has to pay extra to go to this College.

    a) since when are there districts for Colleges? She pays the $$$. Why would they care?

    b) How the hell do you find out what school you are zoned to? She lives in Memorial area. Very close to 10 and the Beltway.

    Very frustrating.

She can attend, but she is "out of district" and will have to pay extra tuition fees.

    I think that's what he's asking. :)

That does suck. ACC didn't have that (as far as I could tell).

It happened when she lived in Oak Forest last year and registerd at NHMCC (Fairbanks Center). They said that she was out of district and that she would have to pay extra fees. She paid the fees because she didnt know.

Dude she has to pay DOUBLE what she would normally pay if she was in district..... Whatever the hell that means. She talked to the admissions person and they said that her zip code was not on the list of ANY of their schools - for HCC or NHMCC.

    What the hell?

It's crazy, I took a Summer class at HCC once and it is located in the Alief campus on Bissonnet and Eldridge, yet because I live in Alief which has it's own school district, I was considered out of district and had to pay much much more. Wherever an HCC is located, you are only in district if the schools where you live are HISD.

Just find a friend who lives in the area and use their address. I had friends that did that all the time at ACC.

Make sure they get their mail from the school though. I moved once and had my mail returned to sender for some reason from ACC in Austin, and they dropped me from my freaking classes because they assumed I moved out of district.

My friend is going through the same thing right now. He is having to pay double what he normally would because they classify him as "out of district". He told me it has to do with how long you have lived in the colleges district. If you have lived in the same district as the school for a year then you become "in district" and tuition goes back to normal. Sounds like she has moved in the last year to a new district (the one she is currently trying to enroll in).

Residents of the Houston Community College System (Houston ISD, Stafford MSD and Missouri City) are considered as in-district students for fee purposes. To be a resident of the district, the student must be a resident of the State of Texas for 12 months and must live in the district. Questions concerning residency requirements should be referred to the Campus Admissions Office or the registrar/director.

What about Spring Branch ISD? (where she is located)

Does anyone get to go to college that lives in this school district, or do they just assume that if you live here you are well off and dont need to go to a Community College???

I've had to deal with HCC in the past about something similar. Their excuse to me was that I out of the Houston city limits and in Harris County instead. So for the next year I changed my address to my aunt's nail salon store instead.

A buddy of mine was going to ACC while living in San Marcos. He had the same problem, but just paid the money.

Apparently there's some type of taxpayer funding that goes into community colleges, and those who don't generate property taxes that channel into that particular school don't get the discount.

To answer your question Drewdog, she is probably zoned for the Town and Country location.

She lives OUTSIDE of Houston, or in a Houston zip code that is not of the HCC district.

Try North Harris community Colleges, like Cy-Fair College. I live in Katy and even though the campus you were probably mentioning (not the one in Town & Country, but the one behind FRY and I-10) is out of district for us, so my wife attends Cy-Fair College. The opposite side must go to San Jac.
