This board kills me. How can you complain about a guy brought in for the minimum at a need position? And some want a PF? What the hell are you going to do with Battier, Hayes, and Howard? I'll be surprised if Jacobsen makes the squad, let alone contributes, but it does give us some extra numbers and possibly add some pieces for a trade. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
Did you just say a Ryan Bowen sharpshooter? I can add that to my list of official oxymorons: military intelligence, jumbo shrimp, and Ryan Bowen sharpshooter.
The real question is, is he an upgrade over farham?.. he is essentialy here as a replacement for farham....
i dont think he is actually a replacement to farham....that guy was just a quick fix ...never really was seen in the future plans at least i dont think so...i dont see why some dont think its a good add....6-6 2guard that can shoot...might need to play a lil D..thats all we need....shooters to help mac an yao get out of trouble...and help eliminate alot of doube an triple teams...
Jacobsen is a prototypical Training Camp Fodder player, so I really don't see why so many people are upset about signing him and not Jumaine Jones or another proven player. Proven players don't go to camp for non-guaranteed contracts, and don't go to camp to compete for the 15th spot on the inactive list. Where was all this outrage last year when we signed unproven, "cheap" Keith Langford, Lonny Baxter, Dion Glover and Chuck Hayes? Langford was cut in camp, Glover never played a minute for us, Lonny played himself into becoming a very minor trade asset, and Chuck Hayes earned himself a 2-year deal. By my count, we've got 4 new "unproven guys" this summer, 5 if Jacobsen signs (which I doubt, for reasons of playing time and that Houston would be a fool to give him more than the $75 Grand he turned down from Denver). Say if two of them don't make it out of camp (Jacobsen, Azubuike), one ends up busting (Lucas), one ends up a Trade Asset (Novak), and one becomes a member of the rotation (Bill). I'd say that's a pretty decent offseason, for the grand monetary total of perhaps half the Mid-Level Exception. As for the reason we don't bring over Badiane? Most likely, its due to the fact that if we offer him any sort of contract, non-guaranteed or not, if he accepts, we will only hold his exclusive rights for two years after that. I'd say to start the clock on him already, and see if he's got anything as a 3rd center, but since I've seen exactly 0 minutes of footage of him, I'll trust the Rockets' brass to make that decision for me. I realize this has basically gone completely off tangent, but why do some people automatically believe that this off-season was a waste? Aren't the Rockets allowed to find some scrub talent for bargain prices? A 25% sucess rate isn't too much to ask, is it?
The women there are not really hotter than American women, the fact that Okur, Peja, etc have hot wives is the economy. Rich American NBA ballers have to compete with plenty of NFL/MLB guys, CEOs, high power lawyers, etc for hot women. There are not as many guys with similar earning power over in Turkey and Serbia, I think. Thus, the hot women over there who want to marry rich have less choices. Besides, it's not like the American millionaire atheletes marry ugly...
As for Jacobsen, his contract is only partially guaranteed, probably meaning he and 'buike are competing for the last remaining roster spot as a deep bench 2 guard. Both will get a chance to showcase themselves for other NBA teams or Euro teams in the preseason a bit if they don't get a Rockets roster spot, though. Listening to Van Gundy's radio interview the other day, he mentioned a need for another big, so there probably will be some signing for a big guy sometime before training camp. Don't know who it will be (I'm guessing Haryasz is the fallback option if no vets signs).
It may also be a dead giveaway that there is a trade in the works. Head's position on the team lessens with this acquisition. Since now we are in position to do a 2 for 1 trade now, look for Juwan + Head for similar salaried big man. Better option than signing a low salaried PF.
Rockets are taking the Suns route. Pick up players who's skills are magnified in YOUR system. Tim Thomas was worth nothing when Phoenix got him and they knew that, in their system, his contribution would be magnified. Same with Amare, who is not HALF the player in a halfcourt offense. Quentin Richardson, etc etc.. The Rockets seem to be using the same concept. Pick up players who's value in OUR inside-out offense is more than their value on other teams. Jacobsen is one of those guys who I think will work damn well in a post-oriented offense. He is the guy who nails every open 3-pter, and is not made for PHX's running sytem. He's the guy who finds kinks in a defense, finds some sweet spots, comes off some easy screens, and drains those kickouts. I like it. It costs us nothing, but Jacobsen will make some good contributions off the bench. His skills will be magnified in our system - the first time he's been in a system where there is a superstar big man and superstar swingman. Hence, destroying teams by nailing those open 3's. The fact that he got a "hustle" award sounds excellent. If Ryan Bowen could hit 3pters at a 40% clip, we would love him. It seems that's exactly what Jacobsen will bring here.
Trades mate. Certainly gotta dump Howard. then steal his sunnies. we are loading up guards and small forwards. Im sure there's gonna be a move for a big guy by season's start.
