Yes and no certainly one is influenced by their ethnic background but that doesn't mean that people's attitudes are intrinsically shaped by your ethnic background.

In regard to why this thread is even here this certainly seems due to the Japanese War Shrine and China military spending thread where I think a lot of unfortunate stereotyping has been going on. Personally I think it was wrong and above the board for the posters arguing against you, New Yorker, to try stereotype you by guessing your ethnicity. At the sametime I think it is wrong of posters on the other side of the issue to be stereotyping the Chinese posters.

Yes background matters but we shouldn't prejudge each other based on background. I don't hide my background because I decided awhile ago to do away with the safety net of internet anonymity. I'm also willing to lay out my background in the open so people won't bother with the kind of stereotype guessing games. That said though I don't believe being a Chinese-American has been an all consuming determinate of my opinions. Might it surprise you that there was awhile when I was younger that I refused to visit the PRC and even felt ashamed of being Chinese because of what I saw then as a dictatorial government that killed its own people and committed cultural genocide? Also growing up in Houston Texas with few other Chinese and have virtually no Chinese friends I felt almost no connection other than an accident of birth to China. As I grew older and traveled to Asia, and yes even the PRC, I made the conscious decision to embrace my Chinese roots rather than having some genetic predispostion to do so.

Background is important but its not the end all. Yes its true that I have a familial tie to China and the history of it has greatly affected the history of my family I'm not totally bound by it. I will criticize the PRC, the KMT, Taiwan, and even Chinese in general if I think they deserve it.

If you completely ignore the opening post, read the poll question & choices and answer generically, this is interesting. To me the very obvious answer is choice #2 ("Somewhat"). To answer either "No" or "Absolutely" and actually believe one or the other is just crazy. IMO, people who believe "No" are air-headed idealists or aren't old enough to know better. People who believe "Absolutely" are incredibly ignorant and judgemental of others.

I like the fact he said "background", not race, religion, education level, country or anything specific. A person's background is composed of a lot of things.

I should add that even if background is defined to be race or nationality, "Somewhat" is still the clear answer for the same reasons.

Judging from his grammar, I'd say you guessed wrong. ;)

Oh, and NewYorker, contrary to your belief, I don't get upset when people criticise China. There are many things posted about China that I don't raise a peep about. It's the ignorance/twisting of facts that I sometimes get upset about, be it in "holocaust cartoon" thread or someone trying to prove to me general equilibrium isn't Pateto optimal with BS.

Ok, so to tabulate results, thus far we have that I am:

A white angry woman from Iowa who got kicked out of a Chinese restaurant (for apparently being a spoiled newyorker complaining about the lack of dim sum in iowa)

    And...

    A Jew.

What else? $25 bucks are at stake here folks! I'm surprised none of our guys from other threads (the Chinese mafia aka micheon, wnes, rblf, real-egal, contaroner) have stepped up to bat....they were so sure I must be taiwanese or japanese. Hey guys - here's your chance!

If someone gets it, I will confirm. Afterall, Clutch does know my real name...

No one is obsessed in you as much as yourself. I've never speculated who you are, nor do I care where a troll is from. But hey, I guess it's too much to ask of you to get the facts straight. Thanks for the Chinese mafia kudos anyway.

I presumed you refer to anti-China as someone that took a position to argue against China.

I need more time since you were so timid and sensitive regarding your background and the search function is off. I just don’t have the time right now to go through some of your other illogical posts.

So, your feeble mind believe that someone that took a position to argue against China means the same as anyone who argues against china hates Chinese.

You really need help on your reading comprehensive skill.

I assume you're Kinky Friedman, who lived for a long time in NYC, writing detective novels using his experience there, is a native Texan, living in Texas now, and is running for governor. How you find time in your busy schedule is a mystery to me, but I salute your energy. I probably won't vote for you, but you wear groovy hats.

Calling yourself NewYorker is simply having a bit of fun.

    Do I win?? :p

The question " does someone's background determine their position " is a simple and reasonable question. Then the " let the stereotyping begin " by posing immediately after " As a Chinese, would you be pro-China ?"

As a consequence of the second part of the question, a deluge of responses consisted only of perceived Chinese feelings about the subject.

Another comment involved '"Anglo anti-China " which sounds a lot like bashing the White guys.

Nobody mentioned about Greek, Cuban, Mexican feelings in the whole thread which lead me to conclude that this thread is Racist.

It is sad that you have to twist fact and throw out unsubstantiated accusation.

First you misrepresented my answer as :

When my exact reply is :

Now, you said I essentially have been calling you all haters. Please point to any post where I personally did what you said.

Dude, I don't know if it was rblh or michacon or whatever in those other threads, but quite a few chinese posters referred to me and others as "chinese haters" multiple times. And from the substance and tone of many of your posts, there is a level of hatred.
