what is the standard in tipping in different situations, for instance, normal restaurant, i know, 15-20% what about pizza delivery? a dollar, 2, what? getting a haircut? do you tip the ppl at sonic when they bring food, if so how much? if you goto a buffet, like ryans or golden corrall.. is it still 15%? any other situations im leaving out?
pizza delivery - I give $2 getting a haircut? - Where I go costs $12.95. I give her the $2.05 in change. do you tip the ppl at sonic when they bring food, if so how much? Usually the coins I get back ryans or golden corrall.. is it still 15%? Not sure. Usually just leave $2 or $3 at those places.
I don't go to Sonic entirely because of the uncertainty regarding the tipping situation there. I generally overtip in other places. 20% is my minimum unless the service was really lousy. And I generally tip the pizza guys four or five dollars.
Boston has presented me with a new set of questions; maybe someone here can help me out . Service in Boston absolutely sucks. Before coming here, I'd never stiffed anybody in my life. The lowest I'd ever put down was 10%, and that was if service was pretty bad. I stiffed a couple of waiters in Boston before realizing that their service was just slightly below average for the city. My New England friends don't even notice anything is wrong, while Westerners and Southerners are seriously pissed off. Everything seems like it's a rung below the West/South in terms of service. At a top notch restaurant, you get adequate service. At Chili's, you're lucky if they take your drink order in the first half-hour. Forgotten orders, mistakes, rudeness, etc... is normal. Should I tip by my standards or by the regions standards? I was a waiter for a few months in highschool, and I know how much it sucks to get stiffed... but that's also the customers only leverage.
Did you know that restaurants pay waiters half of the minimum wage??? Waiters earn more than half of their money via tips so it's important to reward them for good work. Besides taking into account how well they've taken care of me, I also consider how busy the place is when I'm there. My tipping at restaurants ranges from 20 to 40%. At sonic, I give them $1-2. Same for my haircuts (although I give my long time haircutter an extra $1). BTW, all the playas I know are generous tippers. Maybe you should rename yourself the madfaker.
dam you fools im tired of you dissin me im a REAL playa and i save my ded prezidents not giv them to some fool waiter makin over 20000 a year and u betta NEVER call me a {caricature] i bet u call me that cuz you white?????
Yes, it's apparant now. You are most definitely a caricature. In fact, I'm almost positive that YOU are white.....and you're just trying to give a bad name to those who aren't.
I'm going to go out on a limb here (OK, fine, I'm pretty certain) he doesn't have a clue how 'caricature' applies to him in this context.
I always give pizza delivery guys $4 or $5. I feel sorry for them. Don't know why. I always tip about 20-30% at restaurants. Again... I feel sorry for waiters but not sure why. The worst tip I gave was to a Hooters waitress that kept us waiting for our bill for over 40 minutes. I think I tipped her 12 cents. I recently saw a "TIPS" jar set in front of the cash register at a Subway. I thought to myself "you've got to be kidding me".
-Subtomic Not all places give half of minimum wage. Most of the people I run into get at least minimum wage. I think at the more nicer (expensive) restrants, they do receive half of minimum wage. I was reading in a magazine a couple months ago about what the average tip should be for each of the situations. As I recall, it was not over 20% for anything. I always leave a minimum $2 (unless it's sonic) and usually try to hit 20%. The two most important things to me is to be sure you get the order correct and keep my drinks filled. I think that Houston (probably Texas) has an overall excellent service. Here in Lousiana, I rarely get a good server. Im so spoiled to Texas.
wow... didn't realize everyone tipped so high... I want to help waiters and delivery drivers as much as the next person, but if you have to give that much, then I can just never afford to go out or do anything, period. At restaurants, my husband calculates 15% exactly. I usually slip a few more coins on the pile, generously if the service was good. Still, used to the accepted tip was 15% and now there are all these people saying 20%. You have to wonder if the waiters haven't gotten together and pulled a fast one on us. A percentage is still a percentage, no matter what happens with inflation. And these little tip jars springing up everywhere... since when? I don't give those anything except the pennies I get back. At buffets, seems like I heard 10% somewhere, so I give that. (with a good bit extra if they actually remember you... like the one lady here at Ryan's; poor thing, I always pick her section because I know she's the only one who can be counted on to work hard... so I guess I'm making her work harder.) I hope they don't feel stiffed, but a lot of people don't give them anything. Sonic?! I thought that was fast food, no matter how it arrived in your hands. Never heard of tipping for fast food. Pizza delivery involves a bit more trouble; I usually give 15-20%. And then haircuts. I go to Supercuts, which is like the fast food of the hair industry... haven't left a tip yet, sorry. I've thought about it but I'm not sure what to do with it - there's no place for it on the check. Give it to the hairstylist individually? Leave a couple dollars on her table? Sometimes I wonder about servers at places where we go a lot; if they notice the level of our tips, and if they think it's OK. Hopefully they'll realize that some of us have limited budgets, but overall it's better for their business if we keep coming back over and over.
pizza delivery? usually $5... or more if the order was large... getting a haircut? $2-$3 (my haircuts are $8 so I give the guy $11) do you tip the ppl at sonic when they bring food, if so how much? Nope... no tipping at Sonic, mainly cause I don't eat there. if you go to a buffet, like ryans or golden corrall.. is it still 15%? No way... If I go to a buffet, the most they get out of me is $2... I'm sorry, I just don't feel 15% is worth it for them to bring you a soda or water, I do all the work at a buffet... any other situations im leaving out? valet parking? I don't do it.. and if I HAVE to... I don't tip. Valet parking sucks... and that's a whole 'nother thread. the guy that carries out my liquor and beer from Spec's $1-$2 rH
Man, I hope you are kidding. I'm a waiter, and I only make 2.13 an hour to put up with crap from people like you. You shouldn't eat in restaurants. Go eat at McDonalds or something. I guarantee if you don't leave me a tip the first time, I wouldn't wait on your kind of trash. It's funny, people that don't tip usually have the worst manners. You should use your money to buy a thesarus or a dictionary. Your grammar is horrible.
I work at one of the nicest restaurants in Austin and I make 2.13 an hour. Since we are tipped employees, we aren't required to make half of minimum wage. Also, waiters have to tip out the bartenders and the bussers. So, even if you give us 15 %, we will only walk with 10 % of sales. It's a rough job in certain ways.
Hmmmm...why go out if you can't accept the actual cost. It's not mandatory that you tip us 20 %, but you should take into account what we actually make. I assure you we haven't pulled a fast one on you. We just want to make an honest living. Inflation has gone up, but my 2.13 an hour hasn't gone up in 6 years. And usually, the menu prices stay the same at many restaurants. Also, being a waiter isn't exactly easy. You should put on an apron every now and then. People are rude and unappreciative. I must say that I do work in a very nice restaurant, and the tips are very nice. My customers are usually polite as well. The next time you undertip a waiter and return to the restaurant, don't wonder why the waiter is less than attentive. He or she is probably paying attention to the table that has taken care of them before. It's a bit crass, but that's the way it goes. I agree with you on the tip jar thing. I went to a convenience store once, and they had one. I think that is pushing it.....
