Does knowing someone's background really matter in how their opinions form? If you know someone to be Chinese, will they likely take a pro-China stance amongst a group of non-Chinese? And more importantly....if someone takes an anti-China stance, does that mean they must be Taiwanese or love someone who is Japanese?
For the most part I think its true--your background does influence your opinions on a lot of things. But I also think people have such varied opinions on so many issues, nobody is going to completly agree with what someone else believes in. Human beings have free will to believe in what they want to believe in. Some factors do play a role in influencing a persons opinions--namely, cultural--but other factors do play a part, and for some others, cultural factors may not play a factor at all.
We are products of the sum total of our personal experiences. What if you have a Chinese person that was adopted by an American family as an infant?
I matters in this senario it is more like they would have A OPINION whereas somoene else could not careless Some react positively . .some may not had a good time in China and maybe Adverse to China . . but I would doubt they would be Opinionless. Your background colors your opinion just because you chinese doesn't me u automatically PRO CHINA but I do think you would have more of an interest in China than someone non chinese Rocket RIver
Most second and third generation Chinese-Americans do not speak Chinese nor do they know much about China or Chinese culture. They see themselves as Americans. The mixed marriage rate is quite high. However, off the boat Chinese may be more to the stereotyping referred to by this thread.
I understand but I tend to beleive someone of Chinese Descent would have more of an opinion on China than someone not of Chinese descent [If only because people keep insisting they have one] Rocket River
It's hard not to stereotype, but it doesn't work. Most of the time, people are fooled into seeing what they want to see.
It is not always the case but there is definately a higher probablity someone who is Chinese will take a pro-China stance, just like it is more likely that Americans will take a more pro-US stance. This is pretty much a given, is there a need for a poll?
It might not always be the case, but I think a person’s background will most likely affect one’s view to some degree. It depended on the issue on hand and which one you talked to. Just like liberals in the US are more likely to criticize our government than conservatives regarding the IRAQ war. Sometimes society tells people that they have to act a certain way and believe in certain things based on how they look and where they were born. Its based on the individuality of the at person that breaks them away from that.

I honestly think you're a bit paranoid. I don't think most Americans are anti-China...most of it stems from what happened in Tinenamen Square... We're pro-democracy, and we're uncomfortable with a powerful nation that totalitarian. That's all.
What you're saying is very reasonable. However, the question posed in this thread is a lot more disturbing and stereotypical. The question being is " If you're Chinese, would you take a pro-China stance? ". Does it mean a guy in China? Chinese immigrant? Chinese-American? Why would Chinese-Americans stand with China if there were actions detrimental to Americans since afterall Chinese-Americans are indeed Americans? What's the point of this racist thread?????
