If you watched the WCP game between China and the USA, you'll see how good D. Howard is compared to Yao.

All I have to say is that placing 2 non traditional centres (and actually power forwards) and one lame and non-playing Amare Stoudemire ahead of Yao Ming is purely BLASPHEMY !!!. This Tony Mejia is just an idiot !!

Eh, he can say whatever he wants in the offseason. Sure, we know better, but it'll all play out beautifully soon enough.

I don't think Yao can be the best center because at best he can only play on a consistent level for 35 minutes. ;)

It's real smart to evaluate a player who is not recovering from an injury against a player who was only 85%.

I'm with the camp of who cares. The writer is a nobody. Posting those ridiculous articles by that writer just gives him undeserved publicity.

    So what?

Just change the position, put Yao on the USA team, switch DH to the Chinese team, can U image that?

If Yao played on the US team, he'd never get the ball. And considering the US team plays at by far the fastest pace of all the teams in the tournament, Yao probably wouldn't last 20 minutes a game. It would be like putting Yao on the Phoenix Suns. Simply wouldn't work.

I don't why I post this but feel that it is right for this thread.

    The stats don't lie

Yao is the top-scoring center in the NBA, leading Shaquille O'Neal by 1.3 points per game. His averages of 21.4 points and 10.1 rebounds are career bests, and he has averaged 27.7 points and 13.6 rebounds in nine games since the All-Star break.

Progress, however, does not come in a straight line. The Spurs could slow or stop him today, and, with McGrady out, it is likely someone will if San Antonio does not.

In the Rockets' long, trying season, overstuffed with injuries, even the struggles can help. For Yao, who has said he can only be measured when his career is over, they are lessons, opportunities to improve.

"Yao is not blessed with anything except God-given size and great parents," Van Gundy said. "Everything else has been worked for basketball-wise. There's a lot easier roads to becoming a really, really good player in this league. He had a difficult road, and he made it through his own internal drive to be great."

You know what? That's not a joke a all. On a BBS which I used to "watch" rockets games, there was a guy who said he was a die hard rockets fan living in H-town. Here were some of his ideas on rockets and Yao Ming during 04/05 and 05/06 season:

    (1) Yao should be Mutombo's backup
    (2) Dampier is much better than Yao and rockets should send Yao to Mavs to get him
    (3) Yao should limit his shot attempt to lower than 10 per game
    (4) Sura should be the second scorer of the team
    (5) Yao should concentrate on rebound and defence, scoring is not his job
    (6) Games comments:
    - On all games that Yao scored high but the team lost - I told you he shouldn't score!
    - On all games that Yao scored high and the team won - We could have won much easier if he didn't score that much.
    - On all games that Yao scored low but the team won - See, that's the right BBall we should play.
    - On all games that Yao scored low and the team lost - It's time to trade him!

Before 05/06 season started, he was so confident that he went too far by claiming that, if Yao ever average 19 points a game in any given season, he's going to eat all his 3 basketball.

I haven't seen him on that BBS since Yao broke his left foot. If he is here with different ID, he should know me because I recommended some basketball recipes to him.

You are assuming Yao will not impact the style they play, which is not true!

Let's put someone you are more comfortable with -- Shaq on US team, are they going to run Shaq to death?? Remember Shaq has an open invitation to join US team!!!

The impact will be minor. You think LeBron, Wade, Carmelo, etc. are going to slow everything down and play Gundy-ball just to get Yao a bunch of touches? The team's biggest asset, by far, is their transition game. They're not going to sacrifice that.

Shaq wouldn't be as effective on the US team either. But Shaq is more effective than Yao at having an impact on the offensive end without getting touches in post ups. He's a better offensive rebounder, he has better hands in traffic for dump off passes, and obviously he's still a better finisher around the basket. Yao is a better post up player, but those opportunities would be few and far between on team USA.

Please refresh my memory, who did DWade play with in Miami? Did Lebron ignore big Z?

A dominant center is exactly this US team is lacking. It will make their game so much easier on both offense and defense.

On a side note, Kindger, I found the person you are talking about ;)

Here is someone else whoe shares same view as mine:

Shaq faded in the Finals, in money time. Same with Ilgauskus throughout the playoffs. They did not get that many touches on post ups in the playoffs.

Further, the post game is much less of a weapon in international play than in the NBA, becaues of the wider lane, shorter three-point line, and zone defenses.

Is this pro Yao or anti Yao?? I can't tell...Yao outplayed D. Howard in the tournament, at least statistically.

I saw the thread title, and thought CBS ranked Yao the 4th best center of all time. I was like WTF and finaly there is respect for Yao.

What more do they want to see from Yao. Start growing chest hair and curse like a pro?

    :D

    Who cares.

Nope, his only chance is to figure out how to cure cancer. Time is running out. Forget basketball. Yao better starts applying for medical schools as soon as possible.
