The monstrous new scoreboard the University of Texas' gridiron football stadium, towering over the south end zone at 55 feet high and 134 feet wide, is more than just a Texas-sized upgrade at Royal-Memorial Stadium, home of the defending national champions.

It's nearly as wide as the field itself and will be, for a short time at least, the largest high-definition video display board in the world, school officials said.
And Texas players can't wait to watch super-sized replays of their touchdowns.

"Oh man, that thing's big," wide receiver Quan Cosby said. "At night, we don't need the lights, it's so bright."

The $8 million scoreboard and sound system easily dwarf the old unit. It's the most visible change so far in a $150 million stadium renovation that will add about 10,000 seats in the north end zone, bringing capacity to just over 90,000 by 2008.

In Texas everything's bigger. And more unnecessary.

If by slightly bigger you mean "way smaller," then yes.

Ha ha...exactly. The article on CNNSI actually talks about the Aggies board, and how it's significantly smaller. Interesting to see that the idea was spawned from that Arkansas trip. We went out there for that game, and I just remember being blown away by how big it was, and how great the resolution was. Hard to imagine this one being so much bigger, but it is.

So, was that donated by a private org, or alumni etc. ? Or is that taxpayers money spent on "education".

I almost slammed into another car while driving on campus on San Jac last week and gazing up the Godzillatron. That thing is amazing.

Did you not check that box the last time you voted that said, "I would like to donate $1 to the University of Texas at Austin Godzillatron fund so that opposing teams and astronauts in outer space can see ass whippings in high definition?" You didn't?!?! Well, that was awfully stingy of you....

apparently the Texas Dept. of Transportation may have a few issues with the screen... although i doubt anything comes of it.

Supposedly the ads will disappear everytime they show a highlight or feature. BTW, I hate ads during any game but no one will ever stop the Tundra Zone or the EV1.Net fouline post at Minute Maid. :D

oooh, the cougar high and aggie boys all seem to be a little touchy on the subject of our newfound literal scoreboard dominance.

    francis, u seem confused; y don't u pick one?

How many of y'all have said to your wives, gf's (bf's), it's not the size that counts, it's how u use it. With your godzillatron and the ensuing hard-on's many of you have gotten, seems to me this helps compensate for something.
