I don't consider myself a JVG basher, however i think his brother Stan is more suitable for this team. JVG made a teriffic playoff run to the championship and all of a sudden he starts acting like Bill Parcells. Yet he is a control freak who hasn't won anything yet and not a people person. He doesn't develop young players and only wants to coach veterans. SVG has an excellent record and can coach the young and the old. Possibly Stan could have won a championship last year if Riley didn't want the glory for himself. Possibly those under acheiving Knicks would have made it to the Finals regardless of who their coach was. They had a talented team and many were in their prime. Meanwhile, the East and begun their sudden decline of making the league lopsided.
Not, however, up 2-0 with four home games remaining. There is a reason why "a series doesn't really begin until the home team loses."
The more EDC TALKS UP AVERY the more I see the rockets having a better season, maybe even better than the mavericks. I personally believe that Dirk got his one and only chance. He will be exposed for the 7 foot jump shooter who will not bang with the big boys, that he is. I really feel that Battier will give him a hard time, forget the height. All you have to do is play physical and make him guard someone and he and his jump shot will tire out. By the way Avery Johnson is to blame for Dirk missing those shots he normally makes....just like JVG is to blame for our shooting woes, according to EDC. God AVERY didn't you know he chokes when it matters when you played with him? GO JVG GO, make our shots for us this year. The more EDC talks about JVG the more I like this team. Sorry ......STILL WAITING ON YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO MY PREVIOUS COACH and CENTER QUESTION and to the reason Phillip hasn't won a ring with just Kobe.(Which I argue Kobe is the type of selish nba player enviornment that JVG is attempting to prevent because it doesn't work. And Rudy can tell you firsthand it doesn't work I'm sure. And Ellie would agree with Rudy that it doesn't work without doubt.) THANKS FOR THE DEBATE EDC, my optimism is growing!
And there is a reason that half the quotes like that are turned on their head eventually (Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Rockets, New England Patriots, blah, blah). Unless we're bringing back Rudy (which we're not- he's never gonna coach again, period) or getting Riles, Pop, Jackson, Daly, K.C. Jones, or Larry Brown (and to be quite honest, with the muck job he did last year, I wouldn't even want him)- and we're not getting any of them- no one out there is better than JVG. They might be on par with him, but not better. Avery Johnson is a proven championship player. That's it. Mario Elie is going to be no better of a coach than JVG. I will only say one thing in EDC's defense, and then I'm through with these petty, stupid arguments- JVG needs to prove himself this year, providing the Big 2 are healthy. If we can't get to the 2nd round or, preferably, the WCF or Finals with these 2 healthy all year, then it's time to change.
Worst case scenario, Mario Elie still has more upside, and he is a "Rocket at Heart," instead of secondhand Knicks leftovers.
(1) You are perhaps the only person on the planet who believes that. (2) Mister Van Gundy needs to tell the GM to bring in shooters with young legs and playoff experience, instead of old 28 year olds who haven't won a single playoff game or progressed past the first round. (3) Phil Jackson did as much in his return season with "just Kobe" as Mister Van Gundy has accomplished in his three NBA seasons with Yao Ming.
^ Kobe led the league in scoring, and the Lakers were a better team than the Rox with Just Yao after TMac went down for the rest of the season. What are you gonna say about JVG after this season if the Rox do make it past the first round edc?
How many coaches in the NBA have taken a team beyond the first round in the last three seasons? How many coaches (not in the first group) have been to the first round? How many have a winning percentage better than .333? Going strictly by the results, Mister Van Gundy belongs *after* all those coaches. I don't see how anyone can intelligently argue that the guy can rate any higher than B- for his tenure with the Rockets. first. i wouldnt base his career on a 3 season span. year 1 ,in which he was coaching someone elses team (losing to shaqs lakers i might add). yr 2, readjusted roster that was a top 4 team after all the roster moves were settled. Not to mention what would have happened if howard didnt get the heart virus. Say what you will about howard, but he was still a big part of the team. yr 3, injury riddled season. i dont think its outrageous to see that the shortfalls have been due to a lack of coaching.
(1) Why not? People seem more than content to judge Tomjanovich on a four-year span, including two injury riddled seasons, and two seasons with more or less as many regular season victories as Mister Van Gundy's glorious "return to the playoffs." (2) Other new head coaches have had plenty of success coaching "someone else's team." No extra points for Mister Van Gundy, the grade stays.
developed further how? The dude is turning into a monster and here you are b****ing that he should be more and it is JVG that is holding him back. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt before, but now I have no doubt. Again, good luck enjoying the season (or much of anything really).
Has he reached his potential? Is Yao Ming now a "monster?" Perhaps, but there can also not be a doubt there have been disappointments from his play over the last three seasons. With Pete Newell (say) instead of Patrick Ewing as his "big man" coach, Yao Ming might've reached his full potential (be it here, or some immortal "Top 5 Big Man EVER") sooner.
i dont think its outrageous to see that the shortfalls have been due to a lack of coaching. sorry. type. it should be ...I dont think its outrageous to see that the shortfalls have NOT been due to a lack of coaching.
I like the idea of adding SVG to the current coaching staff. He preaches D almost as much as JVG, but has had more success with developing young players. His addition would only add to this team. I have never liked Ewing on the Rockets. Many point out that Yao's game has improved, but how much of that improvment was a natural progression versus Ewing's direct tuteledge? If anything, others have stated that Thibodeaux and Mutombo have had greater influence on Yao's improvement. It is unfortunate that the Rockets organization did not seek out players/coaches who have publically stated their interest in developing Yao. Big men experts like Kareem, Moses, Peter Newell, and even Hakeem. My hope is if JVG does not produce a team competing for the finals in 2 seasons, Houston brass does whatever it takes to lure Coach K to the Rockets. If it occurs, it would be nothing short of miraculous, but my hope nonetheless.
I know I'm a rookie, but damn, do you ever read your own spew that your writing? You have got to be the most depressing (and by far the most non-informed) fan I've ever read. keep up the good job buddy.
RUDY did a real good job with a solo Kobe, didn't he? Let me guess you believed he left because of his health? Yeah Kobe was making him sick! Still waiting for a response who you would rather have at center besides Shaq and Duncan....since we are cherry picking peoples arguments.
Who cares...why did you look? EDC Van Gundy has a higher winning percentage than Rudy at 568% That is 8th among active coaches and 22 in NBA HISTORY........courtesy of NBA.com SI also cited that he is the 8th best coach in nba history,Rudy was 10th VanGundy has put this team in the top 5 of defesive %'s in the last 3 years He has had a winning record in 9 of ten years. WERE YOU NOT STATING THE FACTS FOR A REASON? Oh Ellie s winning pecentage is not listed.
