Only two other players in the majors have longer streaks this season. Philadelphia's Chase Utley hit in 36 in a row from June 23 to Aug. 3, and Boston's Manny Ramirez put together a 27-game streak from July 15 to Aug. 12.

    Why don't they mention Rollins?

Because of the way willy gets hits, I feel he has a good chance of prolonging this streak, at least to utleys

    It's because he's...

not really part of this year's hit streak bunch, he started his streak last year, and he started mid streak this year and kept it going a few games. It's still counted towards last year, I'd assume (although I wouldn't count last year combined with this year...just seems odd. :p

No. It's accurate. Taveras is now at 26 games. He had been tied with Kent at 25. Exactly what the article says.

Can you imagine if he beat DiMaggio? Now that would be something to remember.

DiMaggio would probably be rolling in his grave at the thought of having one of the most storied records in sports be broken by a guy who can't hit straight.

I can't believe people on this board wanted to get rid of this guy. I always thought he was a good player and still thinks he has potential. This is a great streak he has going on.

DiMaggio 56 Hits + Marilyn Monroe

Willy T 26 hits (to date) + Luke Scott

I am thinking Willy needs a lot of hits to get scoreboard.

Taveras runs hitting streak to 29 games

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Willy Taveras' hitting streak reached 29 games when the Houston Astros outfielder doubled to center field on the third pitch of the game by the Pirates' Zach Duke on Saturday night.

It was the second game in as many nights Taveras extended the longest streak in Astros history with a hit in the first inning. He singled leading off the game against the Pirates' Victor Santos on Friday night, one of Taveras' three hits in the game.

Taveras has gotten a hit in his first at-bat in 13 of the 29 games.

Taveras' streak is four games longer than that of Jeff Kent, whose 25-game streak in 2004 previously was the longest in Astros history. Taveras has the second longest streak in the majors this season to Chase Utley's 35-game streak for the Phillies from June 23-August 3.
