Go back and watch the games toward the end of the season when Saha was healthy. We were a MUCH better attacking team with Saha partnering Rooney than we were with Ruud. Saha's pace just fits in so much better with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo etc. I've always liked Ruud, but he sealed his exit when he left the team before the final league match last season because Saha was picked ahead of him.

As far as the Carrick transfer goes, sure we overpaid, but you have to remember that we had to pay the English player tax plus the Man United tax to get him, not to mention every one knows that we need a CM in the worst way. But in Carrick, we have one of the very best (if not the best) passer in the Premiership. The thought of him sending balls into space for the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Saha and Giggs has be drooling. Now that it looks like we'll be adding Owen Hargreaves as well, we've turned our biggest weakness into a strength with Carrick, Hargreaves and the return of Scholsey.

BTW, after match day 1, look who's sitting at the top of the table. :D

From what I remember, Ruud left the meaningless friendly celebration game for Roy Keane b/c he was not allowed to play despite being great friends with Keane. I could be wrong though. I like Saha, but you don't diss Ruud like that for no reason at. Not after all the goals he scored for United. Oh well, it will work out for both.

Yeah, MAN-U #1 baby! It's still way too early though.

You remember wrong it was the final match of the season against Charlton. And he wasn't "dissed" or dropped for no reason at all. The team was playing better football with Saha and according to Fergie, Ruud was affecting team sprit.

Oh ok...b/c I recall him leaving that Roy Keane send off game against as well. Ruud will be fine in La Liga as he will get to play in another great league and hopefully continue to improve and be selected for EURO 2008 qualifying and the actual tourney.

Man-U will also be fine with Saha and the great Rooney. Looks like Fergy is really pushing hard to get Owen Hargreaves which will be great. I felt he and A. Lennon were 2 of England's best players in the WC.

Xabi Alonso might have something to say about that. Carrick is a very good passer, yes, but I don't think he's any better than Gerrard or Fat Frank - whereas Alonso is in another class altogether. Nobody can match his combination of consistency, creativity and range

In all fairness, it was an impressive walloping of Fulham. I know better than to make excuses for Liverpool's mediocre showing this weekend, but I've seen nothing to dent my optimism for the season. Let our new signings settle, and then we'll see ;)

I think it's safe to drop Liverpool to 3rd or 4th after losing Michael Owen for the season (is that guy made of glass or what?).

I think Arsenal will be better this year ... they should finish 3rd at least. Chelsea continues to dominate. Portsmouth made a great offseason pickup by signing Kanu -- they should surprise a few people this year. Newcastle United should also make a few waves.

I expect both Newcastle and West Ham to have very good seasons this year. I was really high on West Ham before Ashton went down for for 12 weeks, for they still have a great young nucleus with Ferdinand, Reo-Coker, Bennayoun, etc.

Maccabi Haifa 1-1 Liverpool (2-3 on aggregate)

Thank goodness, we're through to the CL group stages.. Liverpool really made hard work of the draw. Did anyone manage to catch the match? I had to keep updated through Soccernet's GameCast - probably more nerve-wracking than watching it on TV, heh

Also, what the hell is it with my teams and injuries?? The Rockets last season, Liverpool ever since Benitez arrived.. and this season we already have four injuries from the first two competitive matches  Ridiculous!

There is a satellite channel that shows lots of la Liga that is available in vietnam and thailand unfortunately I don't recall the name. I would think between CCTV5 and ESPN asia you get a pretty decent rockets fix? Hell as good as most living outside houston without league pass would get.

Dang. That's right. I totally forgot (you can tell I hardly ever pay attention to any team not named Arsenal). And the one day I decide to talk out of my rear-end without fact-checking myself... heh

Man United with another impressive performance beating Charlton 3-0 today. Chelsea also lost at Boro 2-1. That means there are only two teams in the Premiership who have yet to drop a point Man United and Newcastle, who've only played one match.

It would be fun to have an actual race this year, even it were just confined to the big 4.

I'm happy. Chelsea lost and both robben and Boulahrouz didn't play:D.

Of topic: Ajax didn't qualify for the championsleague :( Really pathetic. They won the first match with 1-2 in Kopenhagen, in Amsterdam they lost 0-2 :(

Funny, I thought Feyenoord fans had a real rivalry going with Ajax? :D Or is that PSV I'm thinking about?

They do, Ajax and feyenoord usually fans hate the other team. However i want all the dutch teams to do good in the european competitions. I was very happpy when Ajax won the Europa cup 1. It is better for dutch soccer if all the teams do good.

However i know a lot of ajax and feyenoord (and psv) fans who do not agree with me.

Here we go, Liverpool's first home game of the season - against their FA Cup Final opponents of last season, West Ham United. Kick-off in five.. updates to follow. Anyone watching this?

Half-time score: Liverpool 2-1 West Ham

Two superb goals by Agger and Crouch cancelling out Zamora's early mis-hit (I can't say mi**** :D) cross that turned into a fluke goal. Agger's strike was a thing of beauty, swerved into the top corner from 30 yards with the outstep. Crouch's came just before half-time, took it round the keeper and scored after lovely link-up play between Gerrard and Garcia. Shaping up to be a great match..

Full-time score: Liverpool 2-1 West Ham

Overall, a cracking game. West Ham came back strong in the second half, but to no avail.. Liverpool had even more chances to kill the game off and somehow failed to find the net as well. Kuyt's debut was seriously impressive - the only thing he didn't do was score. Deft touches, good workrate, willingness to shoot. Linked up really well with the rest of the team, too
