As the topic noted, I do not want to hurt anyone's private or public expression of grief.

I am not here to ignore Charles' fate nor diminish the effect it must have on him. I am not intent on causing harm. One disagreeing post from a regular or junior member (not Jazz Ass or that ilk ) and I will happily delete this topic without further comment.

But I would like to offer some hope to those who feel our season is over before it really got going.

    1. I happen to know that the Rocket office has contacted the NBA league office for a hardship dispensation ruling for Sir Charles' salary of $9Million. This does nothing to circumvent or channel funds away from Charles. He gets paid regardless.

What it does do however, is allow us to receive a pro-rated amount equal to 50% ($4.5Million)or about 108% of the league average (whichever is less) to be used towards the contract purchase of a single player. Although other rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement apply, this conveyance can be very beneficial as it is held (for all pratical purposes) outside the cap allowance. This is contrary to what some have postulated here.

    2. Charles has told the Rockets that he plans to travel with and remain a non-playing member of the Rockets team this year. I always felt he did some of his best work with this team while on the bench or at practice. He has coached some of the youger guys, and sometimes giving them a periodic reality check when complacency has set in. His presence will not be without a great deal of merit.

Hope this information is helpful, and does not offend anyone.

But who is there to sign at this point in the season that is worth that much money?

Also, would you know if this affects our trade possibilities?

    Thanks alot Pops.

Popeye, why do the Rockets think they deserve to be compensated? We simply lost a player due to injury, right? It seems like that's always a risk in pro sports. How is this case any different from any other injury? Of course I wouldn't mind if the league ruled in their favor...

It's sad to lose Charles, one of the greatest players with heart and fire.

    I love U, Chuck!

But the season goes on. And you are right, Popeye, that we should plan what our next step will be.

    Thanks for the info, MAN!

    Pops!

    Thanks for the 411.

Also, a friend of mine and I had this very conversation last night after the news. IMHO Barkley would make a great assistant to Rudy. I'm sure he'll take some time off to heal. But I would love to see him on the sidelines and be another set of eyes for the Rockets.

This could be a good thing! Who knows, he might get that ring afterall. How may other players never got thier rings until they became coaches?

    Freak:

We get dispensation because the injury ended not only his season but his career. Just like the Spurs got cap space for the loss of Sean Elliot (at the time, they thought it could be permanent - it may still be), the Rockets get the same benefits.

The whole scenario began with Brad Dougherty (remember him) and the Cleveland Cavs. He agreed to retire if they agreed to pay out his contract. They agreed to pay his contract if the NBA gave them some leverage to sign other players.

The way this particular rule is set:

    1. It is very ambiguous as to what qualifies as as a career or season ending injury. It is left to the Governors to determine. Therefore it is also very arbitrarily assigned.

    2. It reads that the funds that are generated by this special dispensation:
    (a) cannot be used to acquire more than one player.
    (b) you can sign a free agent. None worth anything around right now.
    (c) or, create additional room when matching salaries for trades.

    Two Examples:

#A.Let's say we are trading someone on the tail end of their contract, which is worth $1 Million, but he is worth far more than that in talent and value. You want to trade him for someone of equal value but the player you are getting makes a lot more than $1 Million. You use the dispensatiuon to make up the difference.

#B.You have another player who's salary is heavy, say $4.5 Million. His talent or marketability goes down. You want to trade him along with another player or players for someone with a considerableprice tag. You now can do that.

    Cheers.

    Let's play a matching game.

Excerpt from article on Nets-Sixers needing a 3rd team:

Because Kittles is making $6.8 million this season, roughly $4 million more than Hughes, a third team would have to be involved in any deal. No such team has been identified, and Nets general manager John Nash could not be reached for comment.

    $9*.50%=$4.5

    Hmmmm...

    EGADS!!
Does this mean that Walt [5 mil] + Charle's 4.5 can get us a player making 9.5 Million?

    or am I mistaken.
[As if someone would do that]

I now feel dirty . . . thinking of cashing in on Chuck's injury.
    Pray for me.

    Cab:

Actually, league average is around $3.1 Million I think.

    Approximate quick calculations:

    Total NBA Salary(All Teams)=$1.08Billion

Approx NBA Active Roster = 350Players

Yields Average Player Salary = approx $3.1M/yr

    Walt Williams 4.25M(approx) + $3.1 = $7.45M
(that's really: 85% to 115% so, $6.33M to $8.6M approximately of buying power)

    BTW:It will never happen.

Maybe it's just me, but I think we may only be one lottery pick away from contending.

    PG- Francis/Drew
SG- Anderson/Mobley (if we can keep him)
    SF- Rogers/Williams
    PF- Thomas/Cato
    C- Dream/Cato

I personally would rather take my chances on a lottery pick forward, than an over priced vet. Not saying we tank the season, but with Dream out, it seems a certainty with our inexperience. Another key is if we can keep Mobley, if not we may try to trade him for a decent 3 or 4.

Then again it would be nice to dump Walt, for an athletic forward. Guess at rade isn't that bad, but I would be careful to not blow up our salary cap.

    Good luck Chuck!

    Popeye--thanks for the math.

I know the ruling you are talking about. They rarely ever give that out except for the likes of Reggie Lewis and Sean Elliot; ie, death or health reasons outside of the game.

I was not going to mention this myself because basically what you've done is opened a can of worms that will lead to much speculation and rumors about more salary cap room.

I will be shocked if the league allows that. But who knows, everyone wants to pay tribute to Barkley.

    Thx for your leading disclaimer.

For those of you who are worried about appearing "insensitive" for discussing the nuts-and-bolts of the Barkley situation, please take a minute to consider what Barkley would say if he knew we were doing so:

    "So effing what?"

He's as much a pragmatist as anyone else, and he knows that life goes on.

We're not talking about cracking plane jokes ten minutes after a jumbo jet goes down.

We're talking about the consequences of Barkley's injury.

I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that he expects such conversations to go on.

The last thing he probably wants or expects is for us to sit around and cry over something that can't be changed.

Good point, Kagy! Chuck probably doesn't just expext such converstions to occur, but will probably be involved in such talk with the Rockets' front ofice. Chuck is the type of guy who would be doing anything he can to make sure the Rockets can get that exemption.

Even if the Rockets get a favorarble ruling, the other teams know that the Rockets will be hungry to deal. This eliminates any bargaining power for the Rockets. Foisting the Wizard on some chump GM isn't likely to happen.

Even if it meant Walt+CB 4.5, I don't think anyone is crazy enough to give away a $9 million player for Walt (even with Mobley).

there's nothing offensive at all in your post, popeye, and i'm probably the most biased barkley fan ever... [IMG]

of course charles would want the team to benefit from him, playing or not...

i definitely like the idea of acquiring someone AS we tank the season, that's a 2 for 1 at the :55 sec mark thank you very much... there's got to be somebody out there that we could put a combination for (a glen robinson type vet that's late 20s, early 30s) whose skills would be a practical steal for 4.5 million w/ an unloading of walt to boot...

besides, we're certainly NOT going to benefit when our injured lord leaves at the end of the year and we're still over cap, sounds like the best damn way ever to acquire someone.
