I don't think it's fair to put Bucky on that list. OTOH, Carlson is the textbook example of backups who suck when given the starting job (we shipped Moon out to start Carlson). IIRC Bucky was never given the starting job (i.e. beat out anyone). He was forced into action because of Carlson's injury and while he did suck, he did surprisingly well considering he had no business being a NFL QB (local product fan favorite).
hey...Cody had some excellent games for the Oilers!! He won a must-win game against Pittsburgh in 1990 where he was absolutely nails, while Moon was injured. If I remember correctly, the year after Moon left (1994), Carlson got hurt and only started like 5 games. I don't know what to make of the Carr-Rosenfels debate except this. Keep an open mind.
kubiak was asked point blank in his interview: can you win with david carr. he said yes. if carr and his ginormous salary isn't starting, kubes is going to have answer what i hope will be some tough questions from mcnair.
I get accused of being a 'Carr apologist' on this board a lot, and that's fine. Believe me, if he doesn't come around this season, no one will ever accuse me of that again, because this is The Year for him IMO. Time to prove you're worthy of being the 'face of the franchise'. That being said, you have to remember that Carr is actually being COACHED for the first time in his 4 year NFL career. He's not going to turn into Steve Young overnight. I know you guys are tired of waiting, and I am too, but just because he hasn't thrown for 600 yards and 6 TD's in the first 2 preseason games doesn't mean it's time to bench him for Sage. Sage was a great pickup. Much better option at backup than we've ever had. But he's still the backup.
From what I've seen of Carr he still doesn't get it. Kubiak though is doing everything in his power to coach him to be a leader and make the right decisions. Rosenfel looks much more poised and assertive. Really matters not as long as we play the one who gives us the best chance to win. I would like to see Rosefel go against a #1 defense and Carr go against the #2 defense.-- Might shed further light on the subject. Open mind.
The thing that sucked about '94 was it was the 75th anniversary of the NFL (I think) and so teams would wear retro uniforms for some home games. With the TV blackout, we never saw a game with the Oilers wearing columbia blue helmets that year (unless you went to a game).
I never understood what folks saw in carlson. he just never seemed to be that accurate of a passer even when he had good games.
No doubt. I've done a little searching, but can't find the details-- except that it occurred in 1992.
That was because the rams were blitzing and Carr was not reading it correctly. When Carr sees the blitz coming he should know to get rid of the ball quickly. I believe Kubiak said Carr was making some wrong decisions early, but improved in the 2nd quarter. It's unlikely for any team to have time to throw when a blitz is coming. Great QB's like Manning know how to beat the blitz by switching to 3 step drops and hitting WR on quick routes.
While Carr has a great arm maybe top three in the league, he still does not look like a QB at most times. A good Qb has poise in the pocket and Carr after four years still has little to none. I think Kubiak didn't watch much of DC play before making his soon to be infamous statement that if he can win with Plummer he can win with Carr, Plummer at this point is twice the QB that Carr is. Hopefully Kubes can coach this but my hopes are still not too high. Side note, it bugs the bejeebus out of me that DC wears his wedding ring while he plays, don't know why it just bugs me; on second thought alot about David bugs me, guess I'm somewhat of a hater.
Kubiak actually watched a lot of tape on Carr and used video of Carr during his interview with the Texans. He showed how Carr was looking at the pass rush instead of looking at his WR's like he's supposed to. He said this is correctable. We'll see.
All I know is that Carr better get it together by the 1st few weeks of the season and that will put to the end to any potential QB controversies.
Hypothetically speaking: Say David Carr's play looks more like David Carr's than Jake Plummer's (can't believe that's even a worthy comparison) and the Texans finish 5-11 and are sitting at the 2007 NFL Draft with the 4th overall selection. Are you going to give up what it takes to get Brady Quinn? And if so, how much are you going to give up to get him?
www.nfldraftcountdown.com's early draft projection has 3 QB's going in the top 10 so I'd just be happy getting one of them. Brian Brohm out of Louisville has the type of mobility that Kubiak's wants his QB's to have in his system.
seriously? there are no less than 1,873 things categorically wrong with this post, beginning with we haven't even played a regular season game yet! let's at least extend the worst team in the nfl last year 60 minutes of meaningful football before mocking a draft that's nine months away.
This was in response to the previous post that stated if Carr failed and we were drafting #4 would you want to trade up and get Quinn.
LOL, some of you guys are already thinking about who we're going to take at QB next year??? After 3 quarters of the preseason?? Man, Carr can't buy a break on this bbs!
