I have a couple friends that went to UChicago, and, based on what they said, I wouldn't recommend it. (This is all based on what they told me) Many of the students hate it, and the ones that don't always talk about the work hard, play hard philosophy, but that's true at all good schools, many of which don't have severe grade deflation. Chicago's awesome, but who cares if you don't get to enjoy it. I didn't even apply because of my friends' horror stories. Then again, both of them have completed medical school and done quite well for themselves, so they might have been exaggerating.
I'm fairly sure Texas Tech will finally succeed in winning the championship. While I can no longer bet my house on it, I feel comfortable betting a ratty trailer in Manvel on it!
LOL ... but I think as long as you don't get sucked into the moral cesspool, ehh political science classes taught by Leo Strauss' pedigree, you'll be fine.
They were actually number 1 on the listh my senior year of HS where 100% of their incoming Freshmen was in the top 10% of their class.
Did all the incomers have a listh? I didn't know we were about to be overrun by a bunch of Cindy Bradys. I bow to your knowledth.
Well, I'm leaving in 3-4 weeks to attend U of C, and I don't know anyone who lives in the city...but thanks for the encouragement .
UChicago actually has the reputation of having the ugliest student-body in the U.S. No joke. I have a friend who went there and they hear this all the time, see it in magazines, etc.
You'll meet lots of people at school. UC isn't far from lots of cool stuff, and I've heard it's a beautiful campus. I just moved here as well, so when the Rockets are playing, feel free to look me up.
I heard that the U of C administration once tried to interject fun into the students' lives (they apparently work ridiculously hard), and in turn, the students actually rallied against the idea. (Urban legend or fact?) Also, my best friend's sister went to Chicago, and she didn't like it too much.
I did undergrad at the school on the opposite side of Chicago, so I know a few folks who went to U of C. It's definitely not a party atmosphere kind of school, but it does have enough good folks that you can have a lot of fun. You won't be having a blast at frat parties and the like, but there's plenty of other ways for you to enjoy yourself in college and still have a great college experience. You'll have a good time as long as you have the right attitude about it. You still shoulda gone to Northwestern instead, but I guess you made a good decision anyway
U of C has to be one of the dumpiest campuses I've ever visited. I went to Chicago as part of a history-dept. research trip last summer and our professor wanted to show us the campus. Jesus christ, it looks like they hadn't done building maintenence in about five decades. I'm sure 50 years ago the campus was beautiful, but, dear lord...it seemed like they took no pride in the appearance of their university. The sidewalks were a mess, the grass didn't seem like it had been cut in a few weeks, and the campus seemed to have a lot of liter. Maybe I just caught the place during a bad time, but I couldn't believe how ugly the place was. As we were leaving, I called my buddy who toured the campus as a prospective law student and asked his opinion. He totally agreed with my opinion...he decided to go to Harvard for law school instead.
not to scare you, cuz it is a great school if you are looking for academics.... but im from chicago and i believe the saying goes 'university of chicago--where fun goes to die' just a heads up. congrats on admissioin though, its incredible that you managed to get in...and youre gna be at the top of the food chain for the next couple years with a degree from u of c.
heh. I'm just passing on info. It's college...you're going to have a good time regardless. And I'm sure you knew what UChicago is like when you made your decision, so it may fit your personality/study habits. Very few people come out of college totally hating where they went. The ones I do know went to Rice, so you may have dodged a bullet. (That's not a dig at the school, just the honest truth...my friends that went to Rice hated it). Just wondering...where else did you consider? The Ivies, Stanford, etc...?
Actually, for some reason I didn't apply to the ivies or stanford. I didn't get into Rice. Chicago has a very different application that you have to spend considerable time and effort on as opposed to just sending out pretty much the same app to all the other schools (which is what I did). Because their app is so unique and because they have a reputation of being so academically rigorous they attract a smaller applicant pool. And plus, getting into Rice from Houston is really hard. I got accepted at Johns Hopkins, Emory, UT and UH, and I went with Chicago. I'll probably apply for transfer admission into Rice and maybe some of the ivies just to see what my options are.
