people don't understand the game of basketball all they see is superstars, they don't know the details, the little things that a player does for his team, the little things that make someone a good player its like duncan, when I started to watch his game, I did not realize what all the hype was...but that guy is a classic basketball player..does everything written in the basketball book I have a feeling that spanoulis could come out as a nash/cassell type a player, not this season, but sometimes in the next 2 to 4 years
This is funny. In a thread a couple of months ago I expressed doubts about V-Span and got similair, silly replies. "people don't understand the game of basketball" "all they see is superstars" "LOL, JVG sucked their souls out ... that explains it" "I don't understand the pessimism from so called Rockets fans" Why can't we just discuss how his skillset and game fit the NBA instead of silly name-calling? I stated my case. Simple as that. Try refuting it instead of attacking the character/mentality/devotion of the poster. My goodness! Maybe we have another Clutchfans phenomenon similar to the Stro-lovers. Don't answer the issues about the guy's (likely) flaws, just fire anything back and hope they don't post again. Won't work. I'll keep posting and I'll keep the focus on V-Span. Good point crash5179. LOL. Dirk had a couple of very good plays and the Chinese fans roared whenever he a shot. He clearly didn't care what the outcome was. It was like the whole German team was either tired or apathetic. Besides a couple of plays by Dirk, they came out with absolutely no energy. I hope there are torrents on all of Greece's games at the World Championships. I'm more interested in seeing V-Span than Yao.
How his skillset and game will fit the NBA? Can we discuss that at least in the middle of the season... Stro/lovers, oh comon that guy was classic! Don't hate on them, we all had fun posting about his plays and lack of soul!
Question. The NBA 3-pt line is like what, 2 feet further than the international line? So when V-span comes over here, will that effect his shot? Will he still shoot at his high percentage? From the few games I've watched him play, I really like his style of playing. I think it's too early to tell if he'll help the Rockets right away, but I have a feeling he's going to contribute in a positive way for us in the future, if anything, from his on-court energy alone. Here's to hoping he practice his NBA 3's day & night after the World Championships.
I wondered the same thing...if the 3 point line is further back, i'm guessing his percentage will go down..that why, alot of the times you see college players struggle in their first few years from downtown....We really need him to shoot the 3 ball....it does us no good for him to make 19 ft jumpers...we might as well drive the lane if he is going to shoot Long 2 pointers...
Actually, if he can make 19ft jumpers I'll be more than happy with that. The whole idea of our point guard being a good outside shooter is so that teams can't double Tmac and Yao all day, and to make sure teams don't just clog up the paint. If you have someone who can make an outside jumper, not just a 3, you force the opposing team to either camp in the paint, double Yao and Tmac and get burned by outside shooting, or let Tmac or Yao burn you one on one. So in essence, a 19 footer will accomplish the same goal as a someone who can shoot 3's: unclog the paint. But ya, I would love for him to be able to knock down open 3's, but I'll take 19 footers every day of the week
Well said. Completely agree. If V-Span is a reliable 18-19 ft jump shooter he should help us on offense.
Dwayne Wade is not a good 3-pt shooter. But he is so dangerous because he can get to the basket and he can hit the midrange shot. I am not comparing Spanoulis to Wade. I am just saying that if a guard can hit the midrange shot and is not afraid to penetrate, he will create a lot of problems for the defense.
I'm not sure on this, I may be wrong, But I think saying the international 3 point line is 2 feet closer than the NBA 3 point line is quite an exagerration. I believe the NCAA line is 19 feet 9 inches the FIBA line is 22 feet 11 inches the NBA line is 23 feet 9 inches I'm just going by memory there so i could be wrong, but it's nowhere near a 2 foot difference, nor is the FIBA 3 point shot close to the NCAA 3 point shot.
Great game by Spanoulis today vs. Qatar. I don't have his stats yet but he was really impressive. Greece won 84-64.
I think his defense is quite decent after watching his play with the greek national team. He is a team player and plays with heart like Battier. I am not sure if he can hit the open shots behind the arc in the NBA, but he has certainly the court vision to find a open man. He can make things happen on the court.
As I know from fiba.com, he got 17 points, 4 Assists and some steals. 7 of 7 from the line, made 2 of 3 3point Attemps in 26 mins, quite impressive performance.
You're right about his shooting, he isn't very consistent, but he's really great at penetrating and sharing the ball. Does anyone have his stats btw? I would really appreciate it if someone could find the stats for the game (and for the other games as well, unfortunately the FIBA website sucks).
Thanks. Can you give me a link to the stats (for all the games if it's possible) because I had a hard time finding them?
The fiba website does not work right now, but I has followed the play by play of the game. Perhaps u can check it later on http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/06_wcm/index.asp to find some details.
Thanks. Hopefully the boxscores will be available later in the day, even though I wouldn't count on it.
No. The FIBA 3 pointer is only about 9 inches farther out than the college 3, and much shorter (3 feet) than the NBA 3 pointer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_field_goal
