Or at least, that's what Kaz Hirai and the guys at Sony are planning to do with the PS3: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6156046.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6156046
sounds like a bunch of hot air to me. this guy is gonna be looking for a new gig soon... they haven't even started manufacturing these things? hmmm.. your fixing to launch a product that in it's previous versions been a pop-culture icon,ect... more importantly you are fixing to launch a product that will basically make our almost break you...yet you still can't give us definate answers except, ODOYLE RULES?!!! very nice
Not sure exactly what you're referring to, but Sony's probably given out more answers than Nintendo, and Microsoft at this point last year. I would like some more answers though, especially regarding their online service (and maybe the Linux stuff). That's one thing they've touched very little on, and it is probably one of the more important things for the PS3. As for the manufacturing issue, that is a bit strange. IIRC, I don't think MS started 360 production until around this time last year, but then again...we all know how well that worked out. There were reports about a month or so ago that early PS3 production started in China (IIRC). Either those were false, or perhaps the parts are being manufactured (the motherboards for example), but not the whole system...or something like that. Another possibility is that Kaz doesn't know anything about the production side of things (SCEJ probably does that stuff). He said in that interview that 2M PS3s would be shipped by the end of the calendar year, which could be possible (downgraded from the 4M estimates), but it wasn't that long ago that Sony restated the 2M at launch, 4M by end of 2006, and 6M by end of FY estimates (not to mention the GS launch estimates for the US, which were based on estimates from Sony IIRC). Who knows for sure though...if 2M by end of 06 is true, maybe they don't have to start production until later. And as for the PS3 marketshare >= PS2 marketshare...I'd be very surprised if that happened...and that would be assuming pretty much the best for Sony.
Might as well post this stuff here too since it is interesting, but probably not thread-worthy by itself (especially since they'd have to be in multiple threads probably). OXM and PSM both have some reviews, info, and rumors in their latest issues. OXM up first: http://www.gamersreports.com/news/3488/ Video from the FEAR demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4dQlRKEO5c Now for PSM. You can read about the scores (FF12, Okami, Yakuza, etc.), previews, info (FF13 details), rumors ("new" PSP), etc. in PSM at the following link (thanks to ZBOX): http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=464111 There are supposed to be at least 3 secret PS3 projects in the next issue. Impressions from the Xbox Live Camera: http://www.xbox365.com/news.cgi?id=GGNNLrHLHu08171336 Apparently, some people were able to get this at Toys-R-Us for $40. I don't think it was supposed to come out until next month, but they're selling them early I guess. 720p direct-feed videos of some PS3 games (mostly from E3, but with some new footage in places): http://www.playsyde.com/news_3319_en.html Info regarding final PS3 devkits: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3152911 (with video) http://ps3.ign.com/articles/726/726255p1.html Might have gone a little overboard with all those topics.
It's hard to do what he's saying simply bc of the initial price of the PS3 and the lack of quality titles (as of yet) announced for the system. Obviously this guy is very biased, but in honesty all the game system makers say the same things about their consoles each time a new one comes out so I tend to disregard most of their outrageous statements. I honestly think the 360 will win the wars in America but Wii will win in Japan. Regardless, I plan on purchasing all three. I already have a 360 and I can't wait to buy the other two systems, when the prices go down some.
Actually, I think the announced PS3 titles are better than the titles announced for the 360 and Wii (at least in terms of sales and stuff). It has been mostly the same stuff that was huge on the PS1/PS2 (Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, MGS, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Ratchet & Clank, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Hot Shots, Warhawk, etc.), some support from devs that didn't support the PS2 (Starbreeze, Valve, iD, Factor 5, Ninja Theory, Bethesda (maybe), Crytek, etc), and some new IPs from their 1st/2nd party developers (Resistance, Naughty Dog's game, MotorStorm, Afrika, etc). The games and developer support are probably the best thing Sony has going for the PS3 at the moment. The PS3 will get plenty of quality titles. Whether or not they're worth $500-$600 to play though...
I'd agree with that, though most of them won't be anywhere near launch for the most part. In addition, I think a lot of the new IPs on 360 will have time to make a name for themselves.
Oh yeah, most of them won't be out at launch (which is good, both for us and Sony). A lot of them seem to be scheduled for a 2007-2008 release though (RE, MGS, DMC, FF, GT, VF, Tekken, etc.), which won't be THAT long after launch (maybe like the big 2001 holidays that the PS2 had). There will be a decent number of those titles in the "launch window" too (Resistance, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Hot Shots, etc.). I do agree that the 360 is getting some nice new IPs (Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Saints Row, Mass Effect, etc.). That should help them out against the PS3...at least in the US. edit: Plus Gears of War....can't believe I forgot that one.
I think the Nintendo and MS beancounters are salivating over how there's little chance that 70 million people are going to buy a ~500 dollar machine during 7 years. Since this is PS3 related.... Thursday, 17 August 2006 Developers, Sony Still Lagging Behind on Motion Control? Topic: Console Games So after a long blackout of information on PlayStation 3, a select group of journalists went over to Sega's office yesterday to play launch title Full Auto 2: Battlelines on actual real living breathing PS3 development stations (you can see a video, including shots of the controller and on-screen menu bar, at Gamevideos). I felt the game (which was at alpha stage) was good enough; in looks and feel it was pretty much identical to the Xbox 360 version (which I was half a fan of), and the multiplayer modes have been greatly expanded, so there's lots of potential there for online fun and people calling me racial slurs. But here's what made the biggest impression on me. The developers told us that although we'd be using real PS3 controllers, they didn't yet have the motion-sensing functionality built in. And not only that, although they referred to the build as "feature-complete," they did admit that the one feature that was not yet included was (wait for it) motion-sensing, although they did "have some cool ideas." There was plenty of speculation after Sony's E3 conference that the motion-sensing functionality was jammed into the controller at the last minute as a reaction to Nintendo's strategy. This was backed up by the Warhawk developers' offhand remarks that they'd implemented motion sensing "in just a couple weeks" Not to mention that Warhawk was the only title on the floor with motion control. Not to mention the fact that apparently the first many game developers had even heard of the functionality was right there at that press conference. Today would seem not only to back that up, but go even further -- remember, the controllers we had in front of us didn't even have the motion sensors inside them! ___-____-___-__ Funny blog. They'll get the kinks out fairly soon.
Well I'd hope so! You'd have to be a little worried about Sony if the President of SCEA was PLANNING on losing market share...!
They haven't started building them??? Whoa... good thing it's not on my "must have," list for Christmas presents.
FWIW, I was reminded that Sony did say that they were planning on being able to make ~1M of these per month...so I guess if they started later this month or in September, they'd have ~2 months to get ~2M units available for launch (or for the calendar year if you think Kaz was mentioning a downgrade and not just forgetting the numbers). Not sure how likely that will be (especially since it wouldn't be hard to have a complication that would really slow production), but maybe Sony had this planned all along. Might have been a dumb/unrealistic plan, but still their plan. Also, IGN posted a video with more on the PS3 OS/UI as well as the XBL camera: http://media.games.ign.com/articles/693/693580/vids_1.html
