ROXRAN, Can't help you with the food thing, but it seems you're preparing for the some kind of future. Cool. Allow me to suggest one item that has a "forever" shelf life and has an incredible internal and external medicinal properties. CLAY. I know, and yes I've heard all the knee-jerk reaction whenever I suggest this. But please, a little research on your part and you will understand. Some suggested sites: pascalite.com shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/clay.htm And for the ladies in your life: eleusian.com.au/product_range_ingredients_tech.htm And if your not convinced, even within my family I have excellent case histories of using clay both externally and internally. Again, I'm only suggesting this because you're stocking an underground shelter. Otherwise my keyboard would've been quiet. RR
"How is clay used? For maintaining good health, as well as healing and therapeutic purposes, clay may be used both externally and internally. For external use, clay may be mixed with water or other mediums to form a paste for soothing and drawing. Internally/orally clay powder can be added to water, juice, etc. or sprinkled on food. It can also be taken in capsule or tablet form. In all cases, clay should be accompanied by sensible and healthy eating habits including lots of water. " I guess this is where the term mud pie came from?
Funny, I had a patient a year ago that ate clay regularly. She was from Nigeria and apparently this is quite common. Anyways she had a massive hookworm infection which caused a severe anemia. If I were you, I would stay away from eating the uncooked clay (I suppose roasted clay is probably safer?).
Clay is edible and can act as an antacid. The reason why children are discouraged to eat clay is because some soils are contaminated with lead. If you're considering it, don't go on the cheap. If I made a doomsday bunker, I'd research into compost piles and fish farms. Or watch Blast from the Past a hundred times to let things marinate....
Of course one shouldn't run to the backyard and start eating dirt, and there are situations (like taking antibiotics) where clay would not be advisable. Like everything else, research & moderation is the first step and first thought. RR
If you feel like you don't know what to do after you come out of the shelter, here's a good reference guide: http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/fallout_2_g.txt
I seem to recall that honey will pretty much last indefinitely. Not a huge fan of honey, but it's a possibility for someone with a sweet tooth.
