"What is the function that a clergyman performs in the world?
Answer: he gets his living by assuring idiots that he can save them
from an imaginary hell. It is a business almost indistinguishable from
that of a seller of snake-oil for rheumatism."

He just said "living," not "fortune." Still...

I look at organized religion the same way I look at the Red Cross. The folks at the bottom... the small congregation pastors, sunday school teachers, and such/the local volunteers and organizers... are often the best we have to offer. However, when you start throwing money and publicity into the mix, I tend to move towards the more cynical Mencken view. On the Red Cross, it's a joy to work with great people at the lower levels when you have a situation that demands a small, local shelter or basic assistance. I love it and it's one of the reasons I like my job so much. However, as soon as you're at an incident where the networks are rolling and politicians are involved, the RC bigwigs fly in and screw everything up with their preening, solicitations for money, and egotistical desire to take charge... it becomes more about them then the people they are presumably helping. Same way with organized religion... I'll never belong to an independent church that doesn't have some oversight because the temptation to fall into a cult of personality is too great.

In other words, Hagee and his fellow bible thumpers are willing to fight Islam to the last Jew.

The fact that fundamentalist Christians can flip-flop on their targets of hatred so easily is frightening. Weren't they all adamant that Jews were 'Christ killers' up to a while ago? And why is it that everytime one of them opens their mouths, it seems like more anger and hatred flow out than anything resembling morality?

I am a Christian. I do tend to support Israeli viewpoints. I neither trust nor support televangelists. I believe the Good Lord will return in His own sweet time because, regardless what people think, there is no clear, written in stone timetable for that event. I have faith it will happen. If you don't, that is your choice. That's what is grand about this country. We can choose the belief train upon which we want to ride.

Sadat was told by one of his advisers about Saudi 'anger' and 'dismay' at his administration's peace proposal with Israel. He was told that the Saudis and many other Arabs were calling him a 'traitor' for doing so. Sadat smiled and told him, "Of course, the Saudis are willing to fight the Israelis down to the last Egyptian."

I am a Christian. I dont support Israel. I dont support Lebanon.

I dont support war for ANY reason.

Jesus asked us to turn the other cheek. Yet on the main stage alot of 'Christians' aren't showing that quality.

It's time to be a pacifist.

I will say this again: The moral aspects of Christianity, Islam and other mainstream religions are admirable, though ultimately I feel the credit should go to culture as a whole, not religion per se. The problem actually lies with their conflicting, monopolistic claims on truth and reality

You can tell me how unintrusive and harmless your religion is - after you stop believing I, and people I care about, will go to hell after we die

You can tell me how pure and good the real ideas behind it are - after your fellow believers, who have faith as unshakeable as yours, stop doing stupid things such as waging holy wars, challenging science and molesting little boys

You can tell me how many wonderful people you know, fellow believers who are great examples of what human beings should be - after I tell you I know plenty of people like that as well, both religious and not

I apologise if I have offended anyone by vocalising my frustrations here, but I mean every word I say

Harry Potter, Barney, Purple Tinky Winky - bad.

    Arma-effing-gedon - good.

i hear you. all good points.

i have a book for you to read....i promise it's not a "read this and it will convert you" book. it's called Velvet Elvis and it's written by a guy named Rob Bell. I would love to hear what someone with your thoughts on religion thinks of it.

I understand your position. It's hard to justify war and killing. Alvin York felt the same way. The movie Alvin York mildly explains it but York's biography provides great insight. He explained that "he had to do some killing to stop a whole lot of killing." Sometimes when a great evil like a Hitler comes along, one has to pick up the sword and become a "paciFIST." But, on the whole, war is a great imperfection in mankind and one of the reasons we mortals seek answers from God, Jehovah, Jesus, Budda, Allah, Evolution or whatever spiritual name you want to assign to the Creator.

Exactly. I know the "I" can never know the UNKNOWN. Maybe when it ceases to exist...I don't know it can only be in theory because the "I" is part of the KNOWN. It's as if all this striving and struggle to reach the UNKOWN is a search within a prison or a dog chasing its own tail because the "I" is at the center of this striving to reach something that has nothing to do with the "I". the belief in god or the non-belief in god is just more walls thrown up in the prison. even believing in non-beliefs is the same thing in another form, more walls in the prison. so without actually breaking free the best I can come and again its another ideal so it probably wouldn't work for long but it's to stop worshiping god or gods and start caring for and understanding eachother. if god is something intelligent, free, loving, he will understand. If it offends him/her then he's not worth our time anyways. we don't need a deity to tell us what is right and what is wrong we can feel it in our bones. Lets throw away all religon and start over fresh.

Now all we need to do is encourage our children on the virtues of suicide attacks such as the good Islamic Facists, and we can be 26.6% as evil....
