I have not had reception on my phone (Unlocked E680i) since sunday, I called customer service and they could not help me so I went to a cingular store and he said that several people with unlocked phones have had the same problem, anybody out there know anything about this.

um did you make sure your phone was quadband or a phone that has a 850 band? people say it don't make a difference, but in Houston, it certainly does with cingular.

Lol, great work. It has no 850 band. It will never work in most places Cingular operates. So you can either switch to T-Mobile or sell it.

 my phone has 850 the problem is 1900, towers are down and 1900 is not a priority for cingular I'll probably switch carriers. Beleive me I did major homework on this phone.

    glad this thread came up.

starting on monday, i suddenly couldn't make or receive calls at my apartment or within about a 1/2 mile radius of the apartment. once i got out of that range, everything was fine. i've had the phone for 3 years and never had any problems like this but it was mostly in austin or northwest houston the whole time. i just moved to downtown houston so that could be it, but it did work fine for the first week i was here. i called customer service yesterday and things seem to be working now (edit: ok i guess it worked for 30 minutes b/c it's messed up again), but is this a problem that will keep recurring and is it a problem with my phone (because it's old and doesn't have certain features) or my carrier (cingular)?

i've been thinking about getting a new phone anyway, and would like to just stay on my current plan with cingular (b/c it's smaller than any plan you can now get and $10/mo cheaper than any new plan i could get) but if cingular is always going to be a problem here then i'd like to know. or if won't be a problem as long as i have a quad-band phone or some other feature, then i'd like to know that. and pretend i'm stupid when explaining b/c i know little about cell phones.

edit: and if anyone knows any good deals for phones right now that would be good. i've checked a few places but they all seem to say the same thing. i'm basically just looking for the best camera phone you can get for free with a contract.

the problem with cingular--the main problem--is that they haven't fully switched over to 850 for the houston market from what i've read. drop calls on cingular IN HOUSTON is not uncommon. I had it when I used a Cingular-branded phone and I have it now with the w810i (although it should be fixed whenever I decide to get my lazyass up and upgrade the firmware).

TMobile for me in the past was much more reliable. But I keep hearing that they too will switch over to the 800-850 band as well.

As for free phones, there's a plethora of places that will give you a great deal with a new contract. I am a firm believer that the RAZR is one of the worst cell phones ever to be released so I'm not going to suggest a RAZR to you. As for the rest, you could check with Cingular and see if they will upgrade your phone to a better one by calling them. They're supposed to pick up the w810i soon (or even now). Aside from the drop calls (that CAN be fixed with updated firmware), I love this phone. 2MP camera at your disposal too.

Well thats what happens with you buy a tri-band unlocked phone and use it with cingular. I told you atleast 2-3 times in your last thread about it.

not to make you (or anyone else who feels like answering) type too much but...

so what does that mean? don't buy a phone that uses 850 or something? or just don't use cingular right now?

why did it suck? i just want to make and receive calls and occasionally take a picture, nothing complicated. is it always dropping calls, breaking apart, or does the more advanced stuff i don't care about suck?

what is firmware and how do i get it updated to not have the dropped calls? can a regular cingular store do it or is it something complicated? thanks.

no, by all means, if you're going with Cingular, you'll need a 850 band phone. they are in transition to get all of their network onto the 800-850 band. Cingular has stated that it will update their towers (Houston included) that will provide better service. when will that be? i have no idea

Personally, I hate the UI on motorolas. It's not user-friendly, not navigation-friendly, and pales in comparison to the series-40 nokia phones and the new sony ericsson phones. I've been pretty anti-Motorola since their STARtac days. Motorola's been mostly aesthetics and nothing more IMO.

well it depends. if you get a phone sold through/by Cingular, you can probably get it updated by them. if you decide to go the "unlock" route and buy a phone that isn't locked into a particular network (i.e. Cingular/Tmobile) then you would have to upgrade it yourself. by "it" i mean the firmware and by firmware I mean the software that it uses. in layman's terms: it's like having windows for your phone and you have to update the software if it is needed.

850 has nothing to do with why my phone is not working its the 1900 that down.
if 850 was the problem my phone would have never worked.

if im not mistaken, cingular primarily uses 850, and if you have a triband fone w/o 850 then it sometimes bounces off other signals. if you have 900 youll get 2-3 bars of service, but almost none indoors.

I used a triband nokia and it gave me ****ty service with cingular, and many a times it never even picked up service..

    so good luck with that..

if ur interested in selling the fone lemme know. im bout to sign up with tmobile.
