The Houston Chronicle has such an array of Sports Reporters, I often wonder why they ignore the activities of the Rockets so much. Especially when the Rockets are the most successful team in town? I only see what is on the internet and its mostly STALE NEWS or reports about othe basketball teams!! :p

I guess there's not much to say about the team right now that hasn't been said.

    Tracy feels better.
    Yao recovering, feeling better.
    Battier ready to prove himself.
    Signed VSpan.
    Signed JLIII.
    Mike James not here.
    Swift gone.
    etc.

    a. This is historically a football town first and foremost.

    b. The Astros have just enjoyed their greatest back-to-back season in franchise history, with a hometown living legend on the team

    c. This town only cares about the Rockets if they're a playoff team, and they've made the postseason only once this decade.

    d. It's like this every summer from mid-July to late-September

The rockets are not the most successful sports team in Houston. 10 years ago that would be correct, but in the last 10 years the rockets have been one of the worst franchises in basketball. We have not made it out of the first round in 10 years. And besides that I would say that the rockets are 3rd in popularity among the Houston teams. Texans, Astros, Rockets and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

one of the worst franchises in basketball? uh...you're exaggerating.
with that said, the rockets are hands down more marketable than any other team in houston, the only reason you can say otherwise is we made the world series last year and we still have clemens.

if we didn't have roger, you wouldn't hear anything about the astros nationally cus they'd be worse than they are right now. as it stands when you hear about the playoff race you dont' even hear the astros mentioned.

everyone knows who tracy mcgrady and yao ming are, people who don't even know ANYTHING about basketball know who yao is. yes, houston is first and foremost a football town, secondly it'll probably be baseball, and last would be the rockets. that's just the truth -- the reason we don't get coverage is because this is really just not a basketball town, and we missed playoffs last year. wait till next year.

there still wont' be much in the way of media coverage, but at least we'll have something to talk about.

    marketable to who??

the astros are selling out games like crazy. they may very well crack the 3 million mark again in attendance.

meanwhile, the rockets can't sell out a building that seats about half as many as MMP, despite the fact they have half as many games.

i love the rockets...but the suggestion that they're more marketable than the reigning NL Champs is completely unfounded. and you don't have to look much further than attendance numbers.

The Oilers/Texans and Stros have how many rings?? Overall, Rockets are the most successful team with 4 final appearances.

The Rockets have been the best Houston team over the years but just like back in the day when the Oilers were breaking our hearts the Texans will always be number one on radio, tv, newspaper etc. This is a football town period. When the Rockets were winning they got their pub and the love from the fans and at that time the Astros were hardly even mentioned now the Stros have had their best two seasons back to back so right now they are a hot ticket around town.

Houston loves winners, Rockets, Astros whoever but you can mark it down right now if the Texans ever get to a super bowl this place will shut down and this town will go f'ing crazy.

As of today (not living in the memory of 10 years ago), do you consider the Rockets the current most successful team in Houston.

The Oilers, by the way, won just as many championships as the Rockets.

In a league still in existence?

The Rox have tried, in a sputtering way, but have just sputtered since the Clutch City days. They owned this town, and gave it away. Tres regret.

Yes, they did. I got to see the games, too, and it was as exciting. Sure, the AFL no longer exists as a seperate league, but it still exists within the NFL as the AFC, even if some teams have been moved, added, and subtracted over the years. The Oliers had a rich history, for those around long enough to remember.

Back to the topic, however... the Chronicle has historically treated the Rockets as a b*stard stepchild. I've never forgotten how Mr. Blinebury wrote off our Rockets in '86, prior to the playoffs, and flatly said they'd never get past the defending champion Lakers, if they got that far. And the S.O.B. never owned up to being wrong, to my knowledge. He is a symptom of the media disease afflicting coverage of the 2 time NBA champions in Houston. Yes, Houston has a history of supporting winners, and becoming indifferent, in the main (except for rabid fans like us), to losers. That's not the case in many cities in the country, where stadiums are filled regardless of how well your team is doing. I'll say this... when a Houston team starts winning, and Houstonians forget about the traffic, the heat, the rain, the day to day existence in H-town, and tune into their team, there is no better bunch of fantastical fans anywhere. Anywhere.

That can be frustrating, but I'll take it, because when Houstonians get behind their team, it makes up for the years that they don't in pure, crazy, fan madness, and I love it when that happens.

So how many people were bigger Oiler fans than Rocket fans before they moved? Be honest. Count one right here.....
