http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3664 Reminds me of a thread that someone made a while back (JunkyardDwg I think?) about the possibility of physical media being replaced by services like this. It would be interesting to see how this works, and how it might change things. Hopefully broadband will be available in my area by that time...not that I'll be living here by that time, but still.
Yeah I think I remember posting some article on this issue awhile back...2016 is pretty far off so I might change my tune by then, but right now I still like the concept of having a physical collection of media content.
Sony needs to worry more about their PS3 selling well at their announced price than what their design for the PS4 will be.
I think Phil Harrison's scheme reinforces the Sony mindset given in that GamesRadar rumor which future owners won't technically own their PS3 games. There's nothing to prevent them from coming up with a tiered scheme where people can buy the game outright or pay to play for a set time period before it expires.
It would probably be before 2016. People are taking the "10 years" comment a little too literally (PS1 and PS2 lasted or will last ~10 years). It isn't like Sony will wait until 2016 for the PS4 if MS and Nintendo release new consoles around 2012 or so (if not before then even). They should focus more on the PS3, but it does take a long time to design a console. They should probably get started pretty soon on the basic design of the PS4 if they haven't already (guessing they have). Now maybe they shouldn't talk about it so much...in fact, Sony should just shut up until the PS3 launches since they just keep making things worse. Still, I think they were talking about the PS3 around 1999-2000, before the PS2 even launched.
Reminds me of that old PS2 commercial that featured iterations of their future next gen consoles all the way to the PS10 or something. Guess it's not a bad thing they're planning ahead, but considering the missteps theyv'e taken already, I would think it'd be in Sony's best interest to hype up the PS3, which hasn't even come out yet; nevermind the PS4.
Here's an article dated November 17, 1999 where Sony talks a little bit about the PS3: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/072/072836p1.html
It was the PS9. BTW, I believe Ken Kutaragi once said something about not even needing hard drives in the future. Basically, we'd stream all our games...and I guess we'd own even less of them than we would with the PS4 (assuming it doesn't have a disc drive). Of course, he also said that the PS3 would bring us a true 4D experience...
I dont think its impossible for 360 to do that now..All you'd need was a bigger harddrive. Games are only about 6 gigs, give or take depending on the game. You could even do it with the old gen xbox. I did, had a 120 gig harddrive and downloaded games off the net.
mmk, I'm a lot lazy, so maybe I missed something, but what will be the difference in the $499 vs $599 PS3 Models?
Yeah, it has been "possible" for a while, but the prices of HDDs (relative to the necessary capacity to do this) and the availability of broadband has kept this from happening (along with other things too I imagine). The PS3 $500 model is pretty much just like the 360 premium model (20GB HDD) but with a Blu-ray drive (and Bluetooth I guess). The $600 model adds WiFi, MS/SD/CF ports, HDMI, a 60 GB HDD instead of 20GB, and a bit nicer finish to the system itself (kind of like the 360). The $500 SKU, unlike the 360 Core SKU IMO, is the more attractive model, unless you somehow need WiFi, HDMI, ports for various memory formats even though USB would be fine enough, etc. Still, most of those things would be "upgrades" that are available for the $500 SKU (except for possibly HDMI, although that won't really matter for another 4-6 years or so at the earliest). Yeah, BC would be a bit different here I guess (if it was even offered). They'd either have to have another SKU with a BR/DVD/CD drive (maybe even doubling as a burner to make it more attractive), or they'd have to offer pretty much all the games online for you to download (in which case, you'd be re-buying your games I guess, although PS1 games should hopefully be cheap). You might have to stick with your PS3 (or PSP/PSP2) if you want to play PS1 games, not to mention PS2 and PS3 games.
