Say someone is arrested and given a $500 bond in local county jail.

    A few questions:

Can you pay a bond with a check or credit card?

Do they have ATMs where you can withdraw money to pay the bond?

If you are allowed one call, and no one is there to answer- is that your only call?

Is it better to call a jail bondsman in that case?

Just wondering in case I was ever arrested in the county.

OK...gonna play lawyer now...any real lawyers out there (ahem...MADMAX) please correct me if I fuggup.

And of course, my answers are not based on personal experience whatsoever! ;)

Can you pay a bond with a check or credit card? Usually, unless it is an extreme felony with a high bond that is beyond your credit card limit.

Do they have ATMs where you can withdraw money to pay the bond? Yes I remember an ATM outside the window where you pay bail

If you are allowed one call, and no one is there to answer- is that your only call? No

Is it better to call a jail bondsman in that case? You should only use a bail bondsman when you cannot afford the bail yourself

There should be a phone at county, where you can make as many calls as you want. Just make sure you know someone's home phone number, because collect calls don't work with cell phones. Also, make sure the person that you call knows your full name and DOB. That helps when they go to bail you out.

Both glad_ken and RMTex are correct, although I don't recall an ATM at County. In fact, I'm quite sure there isn't one.

    Thanks all.

Another question: Are you allowed to use your cell phone to make calls?

I do believe they confiscate that, along with your car keys, wallet and jewlery, when you are booked into County Jail. You get it all back once you are released.

My experience was in LA County Jail, so you might be right.

Sometimes, the officer who is arresting you will allow you to make a call before he arrests you. But once you're arrested, they confiscate everything in your possession. The really screwed up part is that they will steal your cigarettes and lighter, and won't give those back, at all. I guess police like to smoke.

don't forget shoelaces and try to avoid being arrested in steel toed boots or you'll end up in your socks until you get bonded out. And don't look at the crazy homeless guy at all, they don't like that apparently. Had some drunk old man take a swing at me one time, he damn near fell over and got nothing but air but it's best to avoid eye contact in the beginning.

Oh and when you finally make bond try not to be passed out on one of the picnic tables, the gaurds tend to think you must not really want to get out of jail if you do, and might wait a considerable amount of time before calling your name again.

Talk to some of the guys in there, I was pretty scared my first time in, they will put you at ease, give some pretty good advice, most of them have been through it all a time or two before.
