I do think this warrants a separate thread for fuller discussion.

What do you guys think ?

    1. Will this work for the China national team ?
    2. And if for the Rockets, can the current Rockets (Juwan Howard, Chuck Hayes whoever) be the right power forward to combine with Yao Ming ?
    3. If not, what type of players in position 4 should the Rockets get to combine with Yao Ming ?

How will that combination work defensively?

Can Zhizhi guard the perimeter effectively?

i may be a little pessimistic, but it just looks good on paper. last time they played together yao was merely a backup 5. with wang's recent injury and poor defense, i doubt they can be strong enough to compete with elite teams in the world stage. hope i'm wrong though.

Didn't Wang get injured recently? I thought he was going to miss the tournament.

The doors are exactly closed onto Wang Zhizhi.

Following is a summary of recent situation:-

    1. Wang Zhzihzi pulled his ligament linking to his knee in this recent European tour.
    2. According to doctors, a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks rest, meaning he will definitely be sitting out the August 7 game with USA in Gaungzhou.
    3. The doctors' advice is that he should skip the World Championhsip, or else it will risk a re-injury and jeopardize his career.
    4. CBA thinks otherwise, and still registers him for both the 2nd FIBA Stankovic Continental Champion Cup (August 10 ~ 15) in Nanjing, and the World Championship (August 19 ~ September 3).
    5. Wang Zhizhi is currently working very hard to get back on his feet. He went to hospital for physical therapy everyday, practice shooting on a wheelchair, and doing strength and conditioning exercise for his upper body and Yao Ming also borrowed him the services of Anthony Falsone for his quick rehabilitation.
So let's cross our fingers and pray that he could get back 85% ~ 95% by the time the World Championship arrives.

I have to apologize to pryuen and mod that I accidentally pressed the report button instead of reply button.

YUP.... lent instead of borrowed.

Wang Zhizhi is currently competing with time to be able to return to court.

He went to hospital for physical therapy in the morning, and worked with Anthony Falsone in the afternoon for rehabilitation for 2 to 3 hours. He said he felt he is like Steve Nash catching and passing basketballs while lying on the ground.

Ok maybe a stupid question, but i thought that Whang Zhizhi didn't play for the chinees national team anymore, and they had a big fight(or was that Bateer), is the fight over then?

Well back in 2002, when he was with Dallas Mavericks, his contract expired during that summer.

He asked to stay over in USA for summer leagues so as to impress either Mavericks or a new team to sign him for a new contract.

He refused to return to China for those 3 ~ 4 months long closed door trainings and meaningless exhibition matches/tournaments.

He said he would join the national team back in Indianapolis for the 2002 World Championship, but he would skip the Asian Games in December and give more opportunities to the younger players.

Maybe due to mis-communication or misunderstanding or CBA top-down power-play, Wang Zhizhi was labelled as a traitor, and kicked out of the national team.

So right now after 4 years, after a lot of negotiations, Wang Zhizhi finally repented, admitted he was wrong, returned to China, and was reinstated into the national team.

IMHO, there is nothing wrong with Wang Zhizhi in that summer of 2002. But just total mis-communications and stupid bureaucracy on the Chinese Basketball Association part.
