Those of you who read the Chronicle article know the Rockets may be considering him. What do y'all think of the move ? I don't know a whole lot about him, other then he's a shotblocker from UCLA. Is he better than Cato ?
Player Profile Jelani McCoy | 34 Position: F Born: 12/06/77 Height: 6-10 / 2,08 Weight: 245 lbs. / 111,1 kg. College - UCLA '99 He played for Seatle last year and avg'd about 16 mins a game with about 3.5 rebs and .7 blocks. Don't know anything else. and one last thing...he wares the number 34.
I've mentioned in several threads that I'd love to see the Rockets get McCoy. I think he'd be at least as good as Cato, but would come much cheaper. Where in the Chronicle did you see that we might want him?
I picked this little tidbit off of NBA.COM: Picked number 34 when he was younger in honor of Hakeem Olajuwon Makes you think he might be intrested in coming here... well either here or Toronto...
What is so great about McCoy? If we traded for him it would be as a back up to Cato and probably Collier when healthy.
article about McCoy was in today's Chronic, can't recall seing him play, but his per 48min stats are good, you figure about 23 min. a game at his $$ could be be good pick up if no Marc Jacks...
He's a free agent, and most likely could be had for less that the six year deal that seems to be associated with Marc Jackson. McCoy @ 2years, 2-2.5Mil Per? I think it'd be a more prudent move than just going out and signing Jackson to a humongous contract, just because he's the best that's left.
McCoy is active and will be able to run with our backcourt but he might have some character issues, as I recall he quit his UCLA team mid-season after being suspended by the NCAA. Why is Seattle not trying to resign him? And, no way is he anywhere near 300 pounds!
I'd rather sign him than overpay for Marc Jackson, unless he comes at the right price ie: 4.1 million. In fact, I might just rather sign McCoy than go after Jackson at all. I've felt there's been a 3 year plan all along. This is the 2nd year/offseason of that rebuilding plan. Next offseason is more important in terms of upgrading the center position imo.
Adding Mccoy would be great, imo! He is a lot like Cato but actually tries and is much cheaper!!! He is a guy that can block some shots and get on the boards and can also play both power forward and center. If we signed him I see him starting right now unless Rudy stays with playing KT and MO at the same time.

Here's a nice little AVI of McCoy faking out Hakeem, then dunking on the open basket while Hakeem wonders where the ball went.

I will take McCoy if he can play center. Is there any word what the Rockets are trying to do with the center position besides moving Cato or signing Jackson or McCoy? Something needs to be done. And is there still truth that the Bulls are still interested in Cato?
McCoy is a better 4 than 5. People have always questioned his drive since college. The kid has talent though. Having him as a starter at center would be very pathetic...but then again, so is having Cato.
Trade Walt for Jahidi White (Jordan wants cap space and is looking to deal him). Only 4.4 million, 24 minutes a game, about 7 and 7 and almost 2 blocks.
I also like the Jahidi White idea. I don't think he would be the answer, but it appears he would give us the same output (or lack thereof) for less money with a shorter contract. The financial apsects would put us in a much better position to get a FA center in the near future. Washington might actually feel that Cato has more of an NBA-center-type body with some upside. Otherwise the Wizards have Christian Laettner and Brendan Haywood behind White. But I still don't see anyone ever being interested in Cato until he shows up for next season healthy and playing significant minutes. I don't see this trade going down much before the trade deadline. Therefore, I like the idea of getting Jelani McCoy, for low dollars, until we can get a center. Otherwise, we could end up making Langhi play center.
