    China's Yao dodges question on love life, but foot is ready
    Posted on Tuesday, August 01, 2006 (EST)
    China's basketball giant Yao Ming said his foot is healed and he hopes to play against Team USA in coming days, but he refused to confirm rumors of a deepening relationship with his girl friend.

    BEIJING (AFP) - "Everyone wants to know," Yao said in an Internet webchat when asked about his recent appearances with girl friend Ye Li.

    "Everyone wants to know, so I am not going to tell you."

    Yao, 26, who has been recovering from a broken foot, has been photographed at recent publicity events and in training with 25-year-old Ye, his long-time girlfriend who also plays center on China's women's national team.

    Their relationship goes back more than five years when the seven-foot-six (2.26 meter) Yao played on Shanghai's men's team, while the 1.90 meter Ye played for Shanghai's women's team.

    His relationship with Ye was only part of a wide-ranging discussion on Sina.com.

    A major topic was whether the NBA All Star with the Houston Rockets would be fit enough to play in the August 19-September 3 World Basketball Championships and an August 7 warm up match against the United States.

    "I had a check up, we took some pictures of it, the bone is growing back well," Yao said.

    "The problem is that my left foot was injured for a long period and the muscle group is not in good shape ... this will have to wait until I start practice with the national team and the problem will gradually be resolved.

    "I'll try to get ready for Dream Team Seven (Team USA). If I can play in the game against Dream Team Seven, then there won't be any problem with the games afterwards."

    Yao said he also planned to play in the Stankovic Cup in Nanjing from August 11-15, which will include teams from France, Germany, Greece, Australia and Brazil.

    In the World Basketball Championships, he said China would aim to reach the final eight, repeating its eighth-place finish at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

    "Our goal is to get to the final eight. As far as the team is concerned we still have not broken through to the top tier, so the best is that we take the eighth spot," Yao said.

    "If we want to go farther then it is going to take a lot of effort."

    Geeeeeez, Yao Ming is such a busy man.

    In his capacity as the Global Ambassador for Wild Aid, he showed up in a "Save The Shark" campaign/launch this afternoon in Beijing with Li Ning, the legendary Prince of Gymnastics (now a multi-millionaire owning his own global retail sports gear shops), and famous singer Liu Huan.

    Here are photos at the event.

    So for Wild Aid, it is Save The Sharks for Yao Ming.

    For NBA, it should be Let's Kill Shaq in the new season !!! :D :D :D

    Well she is doing fine, and leads a life of fulfillment even though she is paralyzed from the chest down and has to rely on her wheelchair for the rest of her life unless for some future medical breakthrough.

    IMHO, She is a symbol of optimism, courage and tenacity that everyone of us should look up to. A very very tough girl indeed.

    1. Even though she lost the dexterity of her fingers, she has learnt how to control a computer, and she has her own blog on sina; (http://blog.sina.com.cn/m/sanglan)
    2. she has finished her univeristy studies of Journalism and Communication from the famous Beijing Univeristy;
    3. she is the host of her own TV program on Rupert Murdoch's Star TV;
    4. she is a freelance sports reporter;
    5. she is an active advocate for the disabled back here in China;
    6. she is even thinking of picking up table tennis (i.e. Ping pong) and compete in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008.
    Great character !! And she is loved and adored by many of her Chinese fans.

    $10.00 says that Yao has never seen the movie "JAWS".

    I'd bet the he would feel differently about those sharks after watching that.

    JAWS 1 = The swimmer at the beginning.
    JAWS 2 = The water skier
    JAWS 3 = 3D! I thought I was actually in the water!
    JAWS 4 = That shark stalking the original family. like it had a brain and a vendeta against them. That movie alone would change Yao's mind.

    Two words...Horrifying.

    Go Yao.

    I've always wanted to try shark fin soup but always thought it was cruel & unusual so never have, glad to see him get behind it.

    It's very delicious and expensive too. But after I saw they threw the shark away after they got the fins, I really hesitated whether I should go on to eat that. Yao did a good thing. Maybe I should stop too. :)
