I finally started listening to them in the albums, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" and "Californication" and I like what I hear for the most part. Some of the basslines that Flea does are astounding to me.

I guess I am doing this thread because I wanted to hear what people who like RHCP have to say about them. Are the albums before "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" any good? Is the one album with Dave Navarro, "One Hot Minute", that bad? What do people think about the last 2 albums, "By the Way" and "Stadium Arcadium"? What are some of their best songs? Thanks for any info that you can share.

I haven't listened to much before "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik" but most people say the older stuff is better. "One hot minute" had some decent songs but overall was a letdown after BSSM. "Californication" I liked but was a bit more pop than their previous stuff. I haven't listed to their latest two albums.

IMO everything prior to BSSM is their best. Freaky Styley is my favorite album with Mother's Milk a close second. I haven't listened to any of their newer stuff.

    I love Stadium Arcadium

Best songs : Dani California, Charlie, Snow (Hey Oh), Stadium Arcadium, Wet Sand

Stadium Arcadium is a lot more laid back and mellow from their other albums.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was their pinnacle of popularity but it was the beginning of their decline with me personally. After that I completely interest in them.

But I'll admit it, I loved RHCP in the 80s. Everything before BSSM was great at the time but I don't know how well it holds up today. I'll listen to it now for more nostalgia sake than anything else.

But if you haven't listed to the early ones, you need to.

Then listen to some old Devo, Fishbone and Butthole Surfers while you are at it

If you don't have Fishbone's "Truth & Soul" you have to get it. It's much better than anything RHCP ever did. Every song on that album is great. one of my all time favs.

OK, let me go ahead and preface this post by saying that I am an admitted RHCP snob. There, that's out of the way, so here we go...

Manny, you need to go to the store TODAY and get:

    1. Red Hot Chili Peppers (self titled debut)
    2. Uplift Mofo Party Plan
    3. Freaky Styley (produced by George Clinton, and their best IMO)

You really don't know RHCP's unless you've heard Hillel Slovak, their original guitarist. The version you hear now (even Blood Sugar, which was a damn good album) is just a shadow of the way they used to be. They really lost the magic IMO when Hillel died (and when they got sober.....). Just never the same.

Blood Sugar is their best post-Hillel album, but it doesn't compare to any of the Hillel stuff.

The new Stadium Arcadium doesnt have much variety in the 25 tracks overall. After a while it seems like you are listening to the same song over and over again. I really enjoyed their past 2 albums though.

FINALLY! A CD thread I can relate to.

The only album before BSSM that was bad was true men don't kill coyotes.

Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo are both great, but I feel their best work was on Mother's Milk.

Hell, the Sugarfly song on a few years ago sampled MM's "pretty little ditty" on there.

My personal fav. from RHCP was "knock me down. Their guitarist, Hillel Slovak, died and this song was a tribute to him. Not exactly the "Have a Drink on Me" tribute that AC/DC did for Bon, but still a great, meaningful song.

I can honestly listen to these three early albums anytime. While I know that my endorsement of music has exactly ZERO credibility on this board, I still love them.

Yertyl the turtle, Fight like a brave, Taste the pain, special secret song inside, if you want me to stay, catholic school girls rule, behind the sun, etc. I could go on and on.

Be sure to take a listen to their remake of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." They did a great job with it.

I digress. Manny finally put a music thread on here that I relate to.

    I can die in peace.

Also, in case anyone cares, my weekend song is "Dani California" put to Fatty's words.

Basically, whenever we are about to go to Sunday Funday, I always enter the room and start singing

    Jimbomania is here
Time to wake up. Grab a beer
If you don't then you're a (rhymes with beer)
    Yeah! Yeah!

    I realize that I'm annoying.

    God, Fishbone was awesome.

Party at Ground Zero, and Ugly are two of my personal fav's. Hell, I remember in College when an unattractive person came into the dorm, I would subtly put "Ugly" on in the CD player. Every one of my friends knew what it meant.

They also have the best lyrical cut-down EVER recorded.

You LYING PIECE OF SH*T SLUT TRASH CAN SCUMMEST DIRTBAG B*ITCH! ;)

BSSM was the beginning of the end (actually it was the end.) i haven't listened to anything since except what i've accidentally passed on the radio.
    they're terrible now.
however, the albums before BSSM are great. hillel was a great guitar player and an excellent shooter of the brown reason to live...

my first exposure to them was when mothers milk came out and that is still my favorite album. the hillel stuff though, is what i think of when i think RHCP. the punk/funk/hendrix hybrid in full effect. they just had an energy and passion that wasnt matched by other lineups. chalk it up to youthful exhuberance and good drugs.

i was a big janes addiction/dave navarro fan and there are moments on one hot minute, but overall it just didnt work, dave just isnt a funk guitarist. the best songs on there were the ones that sounded like janes tunes and anthony's lyrics were about as bad as they got - "meet me at the coffee shop, we can dance like iggy pop" or "i like pleasure spiked w/ pain and music is my aeroplane"...ugh!

i really dont like any of their albums since fruschante came back. they have settled into their little comfort zone and all albums sound the same - adult alternative radio blah. i thought the new album was pretty boring. at least navarro pushed them in new, wierder directions.

and yes, fishbone was/is awesome. one of the best live shows ive ever seen.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic is their masterpiece. It's one of my favorite 10 albums ever in any genre. Everything about this cd is great. Californication is their second bet in my opionion - great CD also. By the Way was good but a lot more mellow than their previous stuff. Everything time I listen to Stadium Arcadium I discover a new song - none of those 20+ tracks are filler, they're all solid. I'd say Stadium is their 3rd best followed by By the Way, Mothers Milk, and One Hot Minute. They're easily one of the best bands around today that's been around for a while.

the newbie S.A is overrated for sure.

only like the first single Dani California. Massively downhill from there.

Blood Sugar ... is the best they've done, and by a considerable margin.

One Hot Minute is better than the general reviews.

I like Californication, mainly caus it takes me back to a certain time and place...
